    Pros

Its a great place to start working after college and they have a great salary/benefits package and support former Coops and interns very well. Team based work is predominant, and employees generally work well together. There is a lot of room to move around (both horizontally to other business units) and vertically (into lower management). Further education is encouraged, especially through in house classes by local educators.

    Cons

It is a younger company. Many in the lower management are less than 30 years old, which could affect some of the relationships with older employees.

    Advice to Management

As a private company, it can be difficult to effectively communicate how the company is doing with the current economy. Remain as open as you can, especially to employees.

    Pros

A very innovative company that is willing to reinvest in it's future without the worries of what shareholders would say.

    Cons

As with any innovative company there is a high demand for responsibilty for those that work within the organization, this can be difficult for those not willing to lead.

    Advice to Management

Continue to communicate with everyone in the organization as that as been very beneficial, especially during the tough economic times.

    Pros

Plenty of chances to get a wide variety of experiences if you pursue them. Always changing and adapting so things never get boring. Up and coming management is very capable and promising.

    Cons

Always trying to get too many things done at once. Lacking focus. Top management is not very well aligned with each other at times.

    Advice to Management

Get aligned and working toward the same strategic goals.

I have been working at Lutron full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - population of young professionals is dominant and the work environment is very supportive
    - lots of chances to review your work to avoid pitfalls in your design, validation, implementation, etc
    - casual work place so it is very easy to get to know other people and learn from them
    - social activities with colleagues is always an option, some organized by clubs at the company, others that different individuals organize based on their interest
    - training is always provided and there is a small department dedicated for the internal education opportunities for professional development

    Cons

    - technical training is not rigorous so you have to be comfortable reaching out to experienced engineers for help and support
    - limited travel opportunities for a new engineer unless you are a manufacturing engineer
    - you are expected to be at the office 8-5 on work days and working from home is not an option for most employees

    Advice to Management

    - boost the technical program for the different disciplines based on what the new engineers use most to fulfill their daily respnsibilities
    - encourage morale boosters and provide a budget for it

    Pros

For those that want to grow and explore new, exciting opportunities throughout their career, Lutron is the place. Before I came to Lutron, I would got bored and left companies about every four years. Their career paths were very linear and jumping to another path was nearly impossible. I thrive on change and constantly trying to improve my performance, the performance of my group, and the company as a whole. Lutron has given me the opportunity to take on many different roles, gain new skills/knowledge, take graduate classes, drive change, and contribute to the success of my group and company. I have seen people in their 20's get to work in foreign countries, develop expertise in their vocation, and take on leadership roles. Employees rarely stay in one area of the company over the course of their careers. They become well-rounded and knowledgeable about Lutron's business through customer interaction, rotational assignments, developmental opportunities, and higher levels of responsibility.
Overall the company stands by its employees and strives to be fair and equitable in all decisions.

    Cons

No company is perfect. I always look for a company with many more pluses than minuses. Lutron has a very strong culture and it is not for everyone. Whenever you work at a company that is focused on winning and hires exceptionally smart, passionate people, the standards are high. It values hard work, passion, and innovation. There is an expectation that you will do whatever it takes to win and meet the customer's needs. People at all levels are expected to pitch in and help out when needed, whatever the task. Not everyone wants to work in a place that has really high expectations of personal commitment, but prefer companies that have structured job responsibilities and a clear line between work/home. Lutron does not, but that is why the company has so many years of success behind it.

    Advice to Management

Continue to offer employees multiple ways to grow, challenge themselves, and contribute to the overall success of the company.

  8. "Excellent work that is suitable for a new engineer. Lutron expects excellence but gives you a chance to learn and grow."
