I worked at Lyric Opera of Chicago full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Superb artistic vision and the productions are top-rated. They are at the top of their field in world.

    Cons

They have the highest turnover rate of any opera company in the United States. Staff burnout is a real problem that they are not addressing.

    Advice to Management

While there is an employee manual that you are required to read and sign it is not being followed universally and different rules apply to different areas. While this is fine is addressed in the manual it is not. This needs to be addressed or your burnout rate and the "honor" of being the opera company with the highest turnover rate will always be "awarded" to you. Listen to your employees.

    Pros

Free opera tickets! And Lyric tickets are ridiculously over-priced so you can save a lot of money if you see a lot of opera.

    Cons

Many employees have a very narrow point of view and have a difficult time taking a step back to look at the bigger picture.

Employees lack experience and skills needed to sell the house and increase the size of the audience.

I have been working at Lyric Opera of Chicago full-time

    Pros

-A lot of my coworkers across the organization are pretty great.
-Working here will mean you tend to have a lot of responsibility (not always with training though) so the opportunity to learn a lot is there
-Some departments are really great to work in (word of mouth)
-People here are often passionate about their jobs which can be great
-The organization has progressed so much from when I started to where we currently are, so things are getting better

    Cons

-Management can be a mixed bag which can greatly affect peoples experiences
-Pay is not great but benefits aren't bad
-Some departments aren't so great to work in (word of mouth)
-The company is still trying to find it's footing in the new world, it's making progress, just slowly
-A lot of positions require long and odd hours
-The culture here for problems and most processes is very reactionary, which means most things get addressed with band-aids rather then good well thought out solutions

    Advice to Management

Pretty much everyone knows who the problems are, but no one seems to want to do what needs to be done. Look at management and take action on toxic managers, otherwise you will continue to lose good employees. And be willing and capable to have employees progress their skills and their positions in the company, acknowledge and reward good workers not bad ones.

I have been working at Lyric Opera of Chicago full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The quality of the work on stage is amazing. Most people are great to work with, including most senior staff. Most departments are working very hard to improve things. Everyone who has any staying power is passionate about the organization and wants to see it prosper. Some newer programs, like those under Lyric Unlimited, are very cool and make me proud to work here.

    Cons

Opera is losing fans. It's incredibly hard to keep producing high quality work when the revenue is so crunched. Much of the company infrastructure was neglected for so long, and now everyone is trying to catch up with new systems and processes. It gets exhausting. Most departments are understaffed with no slack, while one or two departments appear to be overstaffed, chaotic, and inefficient. Hours are long at times, and pay is not great. Communication barriers are HUGE. Lots of people are working to break them down, but it will take some time. Worst of all, there are a handful of toxic people in key positions who block cultural improvement and prevent the growth of trust, even while they do great work themselves.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to be less dependent on the toxic people, so you can get rid of them. Double down on Lyric Unlimited; cut back elsewhere. Keep pushing to improve communication and trust, no matter how hard it is. Create a company where nobody would say, "I'd recommend working for any department except..."

    - given a lot a responsibility
    - if you are ambitious, you will be able to learn a lot and grow

    Cons

    - little to no training

    Advice to Management

    Provide more job specific training

    Pros

Genuinely nice people and an amazing art form. Fascinating to learn about opera, explore back stage, learn about technical stage work, costumes, wigs, etc. Management on a roll trying to find opportunities to improve processes and communication. New open houses are a welcome opportunity to get to know people across the organization. Work load can be heavy at times, but 7-hour workday is wonderful when it works.

    Cons

Pay not at top of market, but there seems to be flexibility to attract stronger talent. Hours can be very long, especially for Development staff.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more and engage team members at all levels.
