Fun and eventful, but still behind the times
Aug 20, 2012 - Administrative Assistant - Development Department in Chicago, ILRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The staff is friendly and the donor-base is very involved. You learn a lot very quickly during the opera season, and will find many mentors in each department who will help your career grow.
Cons
There is still much passive-aggressive behavior from colleagues, and a communication barrier between departments. There are always many areas that are still a bit behind and not thinking with an open-mind. Senior-level staff is not open to hearing lower-level ideas.

Pros
Lyric is applying new techniques to make what is an art on the decline lively again. That makes working there exciting and different. Small departments also give people the capabilities of easy communication between workers.
Cons
Even with the differences in business approaches, the opera industry is still going down, making it hard to stay on a sinking ship, no matter how small the hole is.

Disappointing, not inspired to go to work
Aug 26, 2015 - in Chicago, ILRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Beautiful location on the river, gorgeous opera house Free/discounted tickets to world-class opera Colleagues are genuinely friendly, some senior staff pleasant to work with Big ambitious (if a bit implausible) ideas
Cons
Extreme lack of communication between departments Understaffed, underpaid, inefficient HR is only 3 people, who do not do what's best for the employee, they do what's best for the company Senior staff seem to be impulsive, and opt for short-term solutions rather than focusing on the long-term
