I worked at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent team of product, eng folks chasing solutions to interesting problems in imaging and video.

CEO is low-ego, inspiring leader who empowers the teams at Lytro to build things.

    Supportive work environment.

    Cons

Ambitious tech - very hard. Not sure they'll get there

    - Good work/life balance

    - A bit chaotic schedule/resource planning (at times)

    I worked at Lytro full-time

    Pros

Interesting technology, lavishly wasting investor money is fun.

    Cons

Never before have I been a part of a more ridiculous organization. It is hard to believe that investors would continue to prop up this trainwreck. Although there are a few knowledgeable people in their disciplines, the majority are clueless, insufficiently experienced, and arrogant.

    Advice to Management

You have a small percentage of excellent people working for you but none of them are in senior or middle management. It seems too far gone to fix - good luck.

I worked at Lytro full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great talent. Fun products. Relatively laid-back environment

    Cons

Too much apathy at the top. The executive team is completely disconnected from the work, the product and the employees. If you are looking for a 9-to-5 job and don't mind the commute, this could be a good place for you. If you care about your career, this is definitely not the place to be. Stay away.

    Advice to Management

Power isn't about the authority you have. Power is about your ability to get things done. It is tempting to revel in the power you think you have but, if you continue looking down on your employees, you are only undermining the foundations of your power. Middle-age style management in this day and age and in this Valley? What are you thinking? Please! get over yourselves!

I worked at Lytro (Less than a year)

    Pros

Genuinely new technology and a chance to shape the future of imaging. Not many places where you get to actually be hands on with sophisticated hardware.

    Cons

Making the entire platform work requires all the teams to be sucessful. Some times it seems like certain teams aren't getting it done.

    Advice to Management

Stay focused, make sure not to hedge the bets too much. The product is good, the tech is good, don't spread the team too thin.

I worked at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Cutting edge technology, good pay, flexible hours, and decent benefits, but not much else.

    Cons

Too much work for too few people. Top management is more concerned with their investors than their employees. Top management has a habit of lying to their employees and prospective employees to keep you in the dark about the true reality of their business, so you'll keep working. Working at Lytro destroyed my life. Literally.

    Advice to Management

Start caring about your employees. How many lives have you ruined besides mine? We are not irrelevant parts you can simply replace.

    Pros

Smart people, innovative products, and good work life balance. As someone who is interested in photography I really enjoy working at Lytro. Coworkers are nice and senior management is accessible. CEO is present, involved daily, and supportive. Lots of perqs like yoga classes, free lunch/ drinks/ snacks, and a relaxed but focussed work environment.

    Cons

Fairly early stage so not a huge list of customers yet but exciting to be part of inventing new things that have never been done before. To be expected at a start-up.

    Advice to Management

Keep being agile and innovative while focussing on taking care of employees.

    Pros

    •They care about their employees
    •The pay is competitive

    Cons

    •The benefits are so/so.
•While I know it's a start up, the twists and turns in priorities, direction can be difficult to reconcile

    Advice to Management

Leave somethings on the table, you simply can't do them all.
