I have been working at Lytro full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is an exciting place to work in that it is charting out new territory in the world of imaging and video. What Lytro is working on for VR and cinema is very cool/compelling. Eng team is very focused and heads-down to pull things off.

Jason is great leader - strong understanding of tech and business issues and inspiring motivator. He has been around the block a few times and it shows in his creativity and composure.

Talented engineering team, and good collaboration among execs and working teams.

    Good working environment.

    Cons

The tech is powerful, but challenging to work with. Lytro understands it better than any other company and is making great progress, but you need to be comfortable with a place where it's not simply an execution play on business side.

    Advice to Management

    Keep charging ahead

I worked at Lytro full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great talent. Fun products. Relatively laid-back environment

    Cons

Too much apathy at the top. The executive team is completely disconnected from the work, the product and the employees. If you are looking for a 9-to-5 job and don't mind the commute, this could be a good place for you. If you care about your career, this is definitely not the place to be. Stay away.

    Advice to Management

Power isn't about the authority you have. Power is about your ability to get things done. It is tempting to revel in the power you think you have but, if you continue looking down on your employees, you are only undermining the foundations of your power. Middle-age style management in this day and age and in this Valley? What are you thinking? Please! get over yourselves!

I have been working at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

One of the smartest places I have ever worked. The brains on this team are truly world class. Ground breaking technology doesn't always mean clear direction but if you like creating something new, this is a good place.

    Cons

Revolutionary product means some evolutionary changes, so if you don't like change or need a very exact workplace...

    Advice to Management

stay connected. Jason is super smart and I have a ton of respect. Criticisms come with the role when you are CEO, but I think he has worked through big decisions with a lot of input and foresight.

I worked at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lytro is in a great area of Silicon Valley and they provide free catered lunches. There are also electric car chargers in the parking lot.

    Cons

Some signs of a poor startup are the product is not scalable, poor leadership, top talent is leaving, and the company promotes bad habits. Lytro has all of these qualities and more. I consistently worked 80 hour weeks and weekends and forgot anything I had of a life for over a year. The company is spiraling downward quickly. Stay away.

    Advice to Management

Management changes message daily and then scoffs when work is performed with no direction. Some are not skilled in the basis of the company and were hired only because they were a big name in the valley. They have self interests outside of the company and typically use company money to pursue them.

I worked at Lytro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work/life balance was always great, strong technical team overall. Compensation very reasonable for the startup world. Beer on tap!

    Cons

Lytro's had a long journey; it's sad that it's coming to an end. With the layoff of half the staff, it's clear that the future isn't very bright. My understanding is that damage control attempts haven't been successful about improving morale for the remaining employees, so a further exodus is likely forthcoming. It just turns out that making a not-quite-good-enough product and then trying to sell it for too much money isn't a business-winning proposition.

    Advice to Management

Don't jerk people around. Think about this failure when you go on to other companies - hopefully your chronic mismanagement of this place is something you can learn from.

    - Like any startup, tons of stuff thats broken and needs fixing
