I have been working at M. A. Mortenson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity in the energy groups; great benefits and compensation; family values; if you are a good employee and demonstrate Mortenson values they will take care of you!!

    Cons

With rapid growth come some growing pains. Your individual experience at Mortenson can depend heavily on your immediate supervisor, most are are great, others could work on their leadership skills. My advice to new hires push through the first supervisor if it's not great, most are really great, and want you to be successful.

    Advice to Management

Look more closely at your supervisors working with new hires. Most are great leaders mentoring their directs and teaching them the Mortenson way, a few like to isolate their directs making them feel like they are on an island.

I have been working at M. A. Mortenson full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work hard and the company will reward you. I have been here 8 months and given up some of my weekend time to come into the office and work on 3D models to ensure clarity between self-perform carpenters and the design teams intentions. I have caught several critical items in the process and I just received a Pinnacle award for my efforts. If you put in the time, the company will reward you for it.

    Cons

The longer hours are a normal thing for the construction industry. I work 45-55 hours per week on average.

It is common knowledge that promotions aren't just handed out, but you need to fight for them. The alternative is you leave the company and get re-hired later with the title promotion.

    Advice to Management

Keep employees happy by giving them incentives to stay.

I have been working at M. A. Mortenson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Mortenson breaks its job assignments into separate distinct areas of responsibility. A separate crew for almost everything.

Things are kept more simple and direct.
I didn't fully appreciate this until I started working on other sites who don't have this model perfected the way Mortenson does.

    Cons

Because of having a well regulated workforce, it is difficult to move up the corporate ladder. And raises are hard to come by.

    Advice to Management

Don't take the hard working well oiled machine you have for granted. People want to know they aren't only appreciated with words. Show me the money!
