I have been working at M+W Group full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The people are fantastic. They're knowledgeable, friendly, and dedicated to doing a good job. The projects are challenging and varied enough to keep them interesting. Travel possibilities exist once a certain level of experience is reached. The connection to the construction arm (TFS) gives engineers a great opportunity for feedback on actual construction of design projects. Excellent safety record.

    Cons

Project and client management has severely reduced efficiency. Executive decisions are made on projects without consulting project teams, leaving engineering solutions limited by political decisions. Management has put employees through "collaborative" training, but rarely follows the same values. Travel can be excessive, and remote work is still in very limited use. Engineers are treated much better than designers... and drafters. Limited ability to advance through the company. Employee retention is staggeringly low, most of the talent has left.

    Advice to Management

Utilize the Collaborative Way methodology more effectively. Understand that TCW requires some give and take not just on projects, but with employee's ability to make decisions and take action. May impact short term bottom line, but ultimately employee retention (and their associated project experience) will help long term gains. Connection to Germany and drive to standardize globally are great, but it's been much... too difficult to implement new tools and processes that have seen success in the industry. Implementing the role out of Bluebeam (a software used very heavily in the industry) took months of begging to get and has resulted in immediate efficiency savings.

I worked at M+W Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They do pretty complex projects and some of the people are good people. Other then that there's not much more.

    Cons

Upper management is the worst I have ever seen. There is no organization what so ever on job sites. People running jobs and who are the face to the client are really unprofessional and seem to offer no guidance at all.

    Advice to Management

Needs a very aggressive reorganization of upper management.

I worked at M+W Group for less than a year

    Pros

Very professional people to work with, trustworthy employer with good morals and employee management interaction. Salary rates comparable with other industry leaders.

    Cons

Lack of opportunities fro promotion. Projects and contracts tend to be time limited to the project build deadline. Poor subcontractor standards make the projects difficult to work on.

    Advice to Management

Implement a subcontractor approval list with credible and professional contractors, lowest price bid is not always the best bid in the long run. transfer staff to existing projects instead of hire and fire.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at M+W Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great staff trying to get work done. People here really care about what they are tasked with.

    Cons

Executive Management is lost. Many do not understand what they are committing to. Company's technology is a major hindrance to profitability. While investing in technology will be a drain to income, not investing is going to eliminate income altogether.

    Advice to Management

Determine what M+W is about. Our competitors all have programs, process and tools that they use to distinguish themselves from others. What distinguishes M+W? Do not try to be a flavor of the month. Work on establishing what we do best and highlight that. If what we do best is not aligned with a clients needs. accept that we may not be the best fit for this project and look for ones where we are.
