    Pros

If you work hard, anything is possible. The senior management and local management staff is great; very helpful, respectful, and recognize a job well done. A lot of potential for job growth.

    Cons

Market share is not huge in my area a lot of cold calling.

    Advice to Management

Great job, keep up the good work.

    Pros

Great work environment, conservative well managed bank. The Bank recently announced its plans to acquire Provident Banc in Maryland, which will enhance the company's reach and growth prospects in the mid-Atlantic region. Layoffs tend to be rare and are almost always related to mergers with other banks so job security is a plus.

    Cons

Lack of career advancement options if you're not part of the few selective development programs. Also, it may be difficult to meet senior management without spending at least sometimes in the headquarters in Buffalo.

    Advice to Management

Compensation, whie not bad, could be more competitive.

    Pros

The bank is very committed to meeting individual employee needs-- I needed to take an afternoon off for an emergency doctor's appointment and my boss was completely understanding. My coworker needed a last minute day off to care for a sick child and their boss not only agreed but also recommended their personal babysitter for future use. In general they are understanding about any types of personal emergencies and holiday requests (from my experience). I was given useful tasks on a daily basis and felt like I was actually impacting the company instead of just pushing around a bunch of papers.

    Cons

The building was an icebox- turn down the airconditioning! Generally coworkers were helpful and constructive, but some could be harsh with criticism. Some employee roles were not completely defined which sometimes caused confusion as to who was to do what and when.

    Advice to Management

Make sure all departments are on the same page when it comes to duties and responsibilities, both on an individual and department level. Management's communication sometimes lacks clarity and depth.

    Pros

The MDP gives a fresh college graduate the opportunity to rub elbows with senior management in ALL areas of the bank. There is immense training on sales, management, communication, and leadership skills. If you are in the retail side, you will be provided with a foundation of skills that will allow you to venture into all aspects of banking. If you start in retail, you will be given the opportuntiy to manage much sooner then your peers. You cannot be afraid of sales and having an outgoing personality is a must!

    Cons

Pay raises can be somewhat limited, but given the current state of the economy this seems to be the trend in all banks. The incentive program could use some tweaking as well.

    Advice to Management

No advice. Management is very, very good. Access to management is easy and there is constant dialogue.

    Pros

Strong bank. Great people. Strong credit culture. Substantial investment in training programs. Large amount of community involvement, from both the bank and individual employee level.

    Cons

IT processes and services could use improvement. Sales folks are required to do too much; business development, credit underwriting, portfolio management, etc. Could use additional resources around portfolio management and more streamlined onboarding process.

    Advice to Management

Great engagement, support and leadership throughout the local community. Strong local leadership. Improvement in IT services both internally and for end clients needs to be improved.

I have been working at M&T Bank full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good training programs for qualified individuals. Company is very stable and is always looking to grow through acquisitions.

    Cons

Very conservative culture. Do not have the best systems in place for employees or customers. Other banks are years ahead in offering more technology to customers and employees. Base salaries are lower than competitors.

    Advice to Management

Update systems to make work more efficient and better for both customers and employees. Look at reducing costs through improved efficiencies and pass the savings on the employees or competitors will continue to steal the best talent.
