I have been working at MAC Cosmetics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Health care benefits, gratis, growth opportunity

    Cons

Poor communication with retail partners, slow communication and challenges with receiving collateral and merchandise in a timely manner

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve communications from office to the field. Support locations with staffing even in difficult financial times to avoid getting caught in the “loop” of there’s not enough budget to staff the location for every hour it’s open but you need to make more money to get more staff. We get it! You need to make money to pay the bills. But if someone can’t always be there there are missed opportunities to make that money.

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employee discount is beyond impressive. Of course you get gratis from the company when new products launch. You get to listen to pretty good music all day off the MAC playlist.

    Cons

You only get a set amount of hours a week, you never work more than your hourly bracket unless it’s holiday time. So if you’re hired as a 15 hour artist, you get 15 hours a week and that’s it. Sometimes meeting sales goals is hard because traffic is down, which is inevitable.

    Advice to Management

Upper management, please hire people with cosmetics retail experience. You can’t expect to just send someone to training and then they become an excellent makeup artist with no previous experience. Makeup artistry is tough and you can’t learn it over night.

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Passionate and talented people who are dedicated to pushing forward everyday despite an at times challenging, low morale work environment

    Cons

Political and slow decision making process or non at all. It is very difficult to move ahead when management will not make decisions or if they are being yessed when reality is a different story

  10. "Gained management experience but not worth the abuse from management or no life balance."

I worked at MAC Cosmetics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Product discounts.
    -Makeup application training.
    -Medical benefits are fairly decent.
-Ability to move into management with little or no experience.

    Cons

    -Almost zero work life balance.
-No flexibility with work schedule or vacation times.
-Sometimes vacations can be “canceled” for no reason.
    -Extremely limited formal managerial training.
-Unexperienced employees are often promoted for unethical reasons (I.e. quid pro quo, friends, or relatives)
-HR extremely unhelpful acting on reports of abuse, theft, and discrimination.
-Dress code requirements are extremely sexist; cis women must be covered in makeup, (15 product minimum on her face), wear extremely stylish (unaffordable on the salary) clothing, and are encouraged, almost badgered, to wear heels for 8 hour shifts, while men just need to wear clean, black clothes.
-Management will create hostile environment if they do not like personal style, especially if you identify more masculine. Will even go as far as sending you home or make you buy something to wear. Will “require” you to wear heels when store visits happen.
-Requirements for disciplinary action are completely up to varying management and therefore can and will be abused against undesired employees, while overlooking marks against likable employees.
-Pay is terrible for the industry. Almost $5-10 hour less than other similar cosmetic positions with no commission or opportunity for significant raises.

    Advice to Management

Since leaving MAC, I have seen how many other successful cosmetic companies work, without abuse and mismanagement. While MAC screams about they’re inclusivity, their operations and actions agains their employees promote hostile abuse of power, discrimination, and sexism. If MAC desires to improve their company, the internal elitists attitude must stop being awarded. All genders and non binaries should be allowed to express themselves, and not one employee should fall through the HR cracks when reaching for assistance.
