I have been working at MAIFE part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employees in the guest services department are coming from all walks of life, and although this position is often taken by students and people making transitions in their careers, there is no feeling of angst to "get out of this place". The employees truly do love the aquarium, and you will too as you learn more about it and the great work that they're doing for marine life. As an employee (or volunteer) you get free membership, discounts at many local businesses, free admission to Mystic seaport and free animal encounter programs (but this is more rare). Schedules are flexible and you get moved around the aquarium throughout the day so no single task ever becomes too mundane. The supervisors are incredibly supportive and great to work with. Get ready to learn a lot about conservation and marine life!

    Cons

It's a non-profit organization so the pay is low. Full-time isn't really an option and part-time work can fluctuate greatly between about 20 and 35 hours per week. High turnover rate as people often move on to other positions in the aquarium, finish school, pursue careers, etc.. Endless interactions with children requires a lot of energy and a sunny demeanor.

    Advice to Management

Would love to get paid more and see higher retention rates, but I'm very well aware of the difficulty they have making ends meet as a non-profit organization, even though the admission prices are so high!

    Pros

Kind and friendly employees and coworkers, great work environment with animals and children, dedicated to education and furthering science

    Cons

Can be very long hours, if you are not local to Mystic then getting to work can be difficult due to the lack of public transportation in the area

    Advice to Management

Continue working to create a great environment for employees and interns, including activities to create bonds between coworkers and activities to help workers understand the mission of the aquarium

    Pros

    Cons

too many responsibilities for the job position, not paid for the extra work load.

  9. "Nice Coworkers, Okay Bosses, but Tourists are Exhausting"

    Star Star Star Star Star

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

There are days where it feels like you are getting paid to enjoy a nice day and be with the animals, you get lots of hours, coworkers are great, and the specials are delicious

    Cons

Dealing with rude tourists can be exhausting, bosses are generally uninvolved, and there is little upward mobility.

    Advice to Management

allow workers who have been with the company for a while to have more promotion opportunities, deal with problem guests more swiftly, the employees work harder than you sometimes give them credit for

  10. "Exhibit Interpretation"

    Star Star Star Star Star
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

If you love animals and people, this is a great job to have. It is fun to educate people about the variety of animals, and it is also fun just to see the animals (beluga whales, seals, sea lions, penguins, sharks, rays, etc.) on a regular basis.

    Cons

It can be exhausting at times, and sometimes you will have to stand outside in the snow and the cold on wintery days (so be sure to dress warmly). You will have to learn how to best manage crowds and how to reinforce rules kindly but firmly.
