I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to work with the best minds in finding a cure for cancer. Many dedicated employees who still concentrate on quality patient care are keeping the place afloat. Patients are wonderful, hopeful, giving and worthwhile.

    Cons

Too many chiefs who are more into $, power and prestige than patients or a cure for cancer -unless it can make them more money. Conflict of Interest questions are embarassing to those of us who just want to concentrate on what we are supposed to be all about. Seems to just keep moving further downhill in the CARING and INTEGRITY department.

    Advice to Management

Cut the fat at the top. Hire only upppers who CARE, have INTEGRITY and really do value TEAMWORK. Front lines do thier best, despite some really dumb decisions by uppers that cause employee hardships while we just keep trying to do our jobs, keep our jobs, and provide our best to patients. But we are losing some great people, our 'best asset."

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved the previous environment, but now...not much pros

    Cons

I loved the previous environment, but now...because of the depression, it becomes more and more difficult to survive here. Everyday, you will here some faculties leaving the institution, and of course their employees as well.

    Advice to Management

Should give more chance to all the faculties and trainees. The funding is now only in certain people's control.

I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

they have a free gym on campus for employees, good medical benefits, most patients love you.

    Cons

unfair pay scales (e.g. very educated personnel receive far less often times than partly educated personnel), they have a tendency to prefer to hire from within, very commercialized.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

competitive salary, most folks are friendly and willing to share knowledge, mentoring environment, many educational and training courses are offered for advancement within the institution.

    Cons

It's not what you know, but who you know environment. Fear of retalitaion from upper management is frequently a concern across the institution. Many in management positions are office bullies, and often threaten employees to ensure processes are carried out their way. Even though the way they want it carried out may not be the very best or logical way...they want it their way. Additionally, I have experienced going above and beyond my call of duty for years, only to receive pennies as monetary compensation. Needless to say, I've often witnessed a severe lack of caring, integrity, and character in upper management. Additionally, on a few occasions, as sad as it is, I've even seen forms of racisim. It's right under the radar, but it's here. In some shape, form or fashion, employees have to pay to come to work. Either paying to ride a bus, van pool, or ridiculous parking prices for a local garage.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Tuition reimbursement; insurance; parking; healthy food options

    Cons

management; micromanaging; want you to work 45 hrs without flex time; for a promotion you can only get a 15% increase at max of your current salary (which usually puts you at the minimum range of the new position). Staff is underpaid and management is overpaid; bonuses and rewards always go to upper management, rarely is it given to staff. High turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

Staff also has a family to go to on the evenings. There is apparently something wrong when the turnover rate is high in the departments.
