Amazing organization, amazing people, amazing work

    Pros

MDRC is a collegial place to work with continuous opportunities to learn and numerous people supporting your professional development along the way. The work is challenging and interesting and people from any policy area have a very open door policy for helping and soundboarding. The Research Technology Unit is also a great asset. They are nationally reputable folks and hold in house SAS trainings and are very available. Finally, the organization does a good job at building camaraderie and company loyalty.

    Cons

My experience is related to the Families and Children policy area. I know people in other policy areas do not feel the same and would like to caution that this is not necessarily generalizable to the whole company

    Pros

MDRC is a great organization dedicated to evidence based research to help the social policy populations they work with. The company just moved to a great new office with a view. They have a congenial work environment with friendly, dedicated staff that support each other.

    Cons

The new office location is in an expensive area and there are less cheap food options around.

A great place to learn and grow

    Pros

MDRC spends a great deal of resources to develop their staff and offer opportunities for you to move up within the ranks. The benefits and work-life balance are great and you work with smart and creative people.

    Cons

I can't think of a lot of cons, which might explain why I have stayed with this company for so long. They rarely hire for senior position. Most are filled by staff moving up from within.

    Good rates for consulting

    Pros

It was great working with MDRC as a consultant helping to carry out an evaluation on a program. The hours were very flexible and there was a lot of freedom to develop some my own approaches.

    Cons

The only con is that the contract was relatively short, and I would have liked to have worked with them a few months longer.

Beware: Junior Staff Not Valued, Supported, or Respected

Mar 3, 2021 - Research Assistant in New York, NY
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are a lot of passionate people at MDRC trying to make opportunities interesting work and make the culture better, even if change is very slow.

    Cons

For research assistants and other junior staff, the experience is typically very stressful and patronizing. Research assistants are expected to "manage up" to senior staff which means that the pressures and responsibilities fall on the most junior people. Senior-level work is often off-loaded to assistants without the support to resources to help them to succeed or the recognition that they are working above their pay grade. The workplace culture is one of of toxic academia where only the voices of people in power with research accolades are heard.
