I have been working at MIT full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great people/culture
    - Cool benefits from MIT (free MBTA pass, good benefits package, pension), lots of time off
    - Can travel for conferences
    - Can join taskforces/groups to meet others at the Press and expand day to day duties
    - Overall rewarding work

    Cons

    - Wages below market rate across the board
    - Difficult to advance. Higher positions are usually filled by outside hires. Little transparency on when and how promotions will happen
    - Many employees work over time and are forced to take on too much work due to strained departmental resources (for no additional compensation)
    - Director’s vision can be confusing. Seems like investment is not being brought back to actual people who work for the Press and make it successful, but is spent on other “interesting” things that seem like distractions

    Advice to Management

Try to invest more in the actual people who work for the Press. Lots of us regularly have to go above and beyond just to keep things afloat and are not compensated, or even really recognized, for doing so. Keep in mind that up to 33% of us (according to our internal survey) have to hold multiple jobs because we can’t live off MITP salaries alone. Without clear paths to advancement, this seems like a recipe for a real difficulty retaining talent, especially younger talent.

I have been working at MIT full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Tons of autonomy and meaningful work

    Cons

MIT doesn't care what I do - I find my own funding for my own research projects, but no one outside my research area really cares about my work. MIT is a big place with a lot of completely unrelated stuff going on, so I'm in my own tiny bubble.
