I have been working at MKS Instruments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work like a family

    Cons

Manager and Upper Management need to share more info from the top and explain why they are restructuring the company. Also explain the benefits for changes and goals.

    Advice to Management

Keep sharing info with employees and keep them well informed about the structure of the company

I worked at MKS Instruments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Best work life balance I have ever had.
Management were real people not corporate types.

    Cons

Sad that business conditions were such that layoffs were needed.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing and you will continue to succeed.
    thanks for everything.

I have been working at MKS Instruments full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice people, good work facilities, nice quiet work environment for software engineers. The benefits are good, including starting with 3 weeks of vacation, in addition to 10 holidays a year. The salaries are good as well.
I also like that they prefer to hire permanent employees rather than contractors, so there's not much retraining of new people we have to do.

    Cons

Work facilities could be made a little nicer.

I worked at MKS Instruments (More than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly staff, a great deal of long term employees, stable business, outstanding leadership team. I appreciated the on site cafeteria- made things a little easier, especially during the winter months.

    Cons

I didn't experience any "cons". I felt it was a great place to work and I really enjoyed my time there.

I have been working at MKS Instruments full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Have been working for MKS for many years. Found it very easy to move to new/better positions, which gives you a more informed idea of what the company does. Pay does keep up/or slow down with the times. Great benefits and I have a very flexible work schedule. I am NOT management, but feel very useful, important to the company, and appreciated. I do understand some of the comments regarding management, but I feel that it is mainly those who were hired from outside. Having been here for many years, I've seen many of the executives climb the ladder from the trenches! They deserve their positions.....some others don't....

    Cons

Some bad choices are made when it comes to who gets laid off during cyclical downturns.

    Advice to Management

Keep those employees who have given you their all for a long time. Don't toss them out with indignity to hire young expensive blood.

Full time engineer for many years. Great people with many talents. Great benefits.

    Cons

...sometimes you are expect to work long hours.

I have been working at MKS Instruments full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Very solid technologies
    Strong engineering teams
    Strong community
    Excellent customer relationships

    Cons

    Some stovepipes are very evident
Very little communication outside of one's own division
    Inter-department sabotage was not unknown
A distinctive bias toward education over achievement when looking to promote internally.

    Advice to Management

Promote cross communication between your engineering teams. This could surely create products that will add more value than the sum of its parts.
Understand that promotions should be based on merit, not just education.

I worked at MKS Instruments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They higher great people and are easy to work for not a lot of stress in manufacturing.

    Cons

The pay is horrible for this day and age, also they send our jobs other countries, thus why I am laid off.

    Advice to Management

    Keep our jobs here!!!!

  10. "Stable technology company with no debt and educated, mostly high achieving staff"

I have been working at MKS Instruments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

MKS sells mostly to the semiconductor manufacturing equipment segment, so they are heavily involved in technology. However, very little of it is software-based; most of it (today) is hardware. Workforce is highly educated, mostly honest and high achievement pros, and management has done a good job in minimizing layoffs when the industry nosedives. Excellent salaries and benefits.

    Cons

Infrastructure in facilities and IT is way behind the market leaders, and training for anything doesn't exist (and is never approved in budgets). Company is also very centrally managed - VPs have to approve every expense over $10K, and there are a lot of those in a $1B company. Very little socializing between employees, so if you expect lots of after-work social events, this isn't a company where you would want to work. Last, promotions don't exist until you have been with the company a minimum of 10 years - very few opportunities for career development in any department.

    Advice to Management

Use some of your cash hoard to upgrade buildings and the IT infrastructure, and then train all employees on using it properly. You might be surprised at how much your employees' productivity improves when they have software and hardware that is efficient and up to date.
