Former Employee - Senior FX Technical Director in London, England

    I worked at MPC full-time

    Pros

-It's paid work -People are generally nice/Friendly working environment. -Department hasn't yet moved to India.

    Cons

Inadequate pipeline and infrastructure. Low memory workstations make working on complex shots unnecessarily difficult. The majority of your time as an artist/TD is spent troubleshooting random errors or inacting workarounds to solve issues caused by the poorly implemented and ill-conceived fx pipeline and tools or by limitations of the general infrastructure (latency/bandwidth, disk space etc.). Suggestions from TD's...

The render farm usually has traffic jam on it and especially when several projects running at the same time

I have been working at MPC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some good shows, with plenty of opportunities to grab shots for your reel. Supervisors have a good eye. Colleagues are very nice, usually know their stuff and are helpful. Some nice amenities like breakfast and Friday mingling. Also hosts free courses (drawing, Yoga) and seminars sometimes. Production Coordinators give their best. HOD is an expert in his field, gives masterclasses on new tools and hosts other...

    Cons

A large amount of shot work on multiple huge shows at once put a strain on organization, leads and resources. Some very repetitive tasks. Pressure to deliver shots in barely possible time frames. Sometimes very badly organized (especially in between departments). Some Lead Artists barely speak enough English to communicate properly. People in various departments have trouble with visa and work permits because MPC...

I have been working at MPC (Less than a year)

    Pros

You meet a lot of talented people that can teach you lots of things. The environment in FX department is really good. Some very good leaders. The office is really good. The projects are some of the best in film.

    Cons

The pipeline has some problems. The contracts are very short usually. In London they don't pay OT but they don't ask you to stay late as well.

    Advice to Management

Try to offer longer contracts to artists. You are losing a lot of talent to other big companies.

I worked at MPC full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very good work atmosphere. HOD and sups were helpful and didn't stress artists. People with a lot of talent. Great projects. Free breakfast and soft drinks. Many of the reviews around here make this place sound as a terrible place to be. That is simply not the case.

    Cons

Contracts HAVE to be longer than two or three months. It's the only way to really get the most out of any worker. Six months should be the shortest allowed. It's not clear either the criteria from management when deciding who stays. Right now looks like junior stay and seniors don't.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep people for several years and your team will sky-rocket as far as quality goes. Oh, and get rid of Autodesk stuff for effects. I know you need it for other departments, but it's only dragging Fx with its quirky and old methods.

    I worked at MPC

    Pros

Great shows Great global artists Great location which is in Vancouver

    Cons

Less salary compare to average in this market. Too much overtime working. 6-7days working during crunch time. There were favour issue depending on leads. Worse pipeline make work flow stopped. HR manager especially junior level don't know how to respect senior artists.

    Advice to Management

I hope managers would change the policy to be better not only for productions but also for artists.
