"Very bad place to work, if you want to kill your enthusiasm for VFX go there"

I worked at MPC (Less than a year)

      Pros

      good projects and that's all

      Cons

exploitation, less money than expected, because of the endless working hours, bad organisation causing a lot of stress for the artist. The job that you need to do is for senior artists, but for some reason and someones decision you are titled and payed as a junior artist. This were the worst VFX expirience in my life, VFX industry machine created for killing the creativity.

      Pros

Joining the VFX industry. People, but there’s always good-normal-bad people in every company. Projects are attractive, they will give you a nice demo reel if that’s what you’re looking for.

      Cons

I’ve found that their basic problem is an absolute lack of communication, between departments and even insise the same group. They don’t care about anything but deadlines. You don’t feel like a part of a team. No work for months and then full overtime. They have a big problem there and it doesn’t look that they will change anything, even with all the big companies coming to Montreal. Low salaries, dozens of academy people...

      Advice to Management

Just be clever, like in every other industry. People work better if they feel part of something and not just somebody in front of a computer trying to survive. Do real briefings of the sequences, of every global change, explain better the pipeline, destroy this “buddy” method as soon as possible, take care of the new people, of their needs, their learning process. Just make this company empathic, not with stupid meetings...

I worked at MPC full-time for more than a year

      Pros

-working with the talented artists in the building -the floor and people on it made the studio feel like home. -worked on some pretty great projects with strong leads and supervisors who I learned a lot from. -an incredible pipeline. Katana and renderman are easy to work with and learn. -people are given senior level shots early in their career which is a great opportunity and can lead to a strong reel very quickly....

      Cons

I personally had a great experience working at MPC but it started to fall apart a bit toward the end of my stay there. The amount of academies they were having put a bit of strain on the mids/seniors on the floor. There were so many juniors to hand hold that it became difficult to work on shots. A lot of our shots had to be given away because we didnt have time with the other responsibilities given to us (setups,...

      Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to just open your eyes. Open your eyes to what is really going on in your studio, and be open to change. You pay the lowest wages by far throughout the entire industry, yet cant even get the bids to some major films. I understand the business model for having a larger amount of juniors via academy, but you need to limit the amount that make it to the floor and work on shots, so they aren't...

I worked at MPC for more than a year

      Pros

      - Overtime 1.5x hourly rate - Using Katana - Pipeline actually works - Some leads and supervisors are actually on the ball - Good varieties of works to put in your showreel

      Cons

      - Low hourly rate - Being in Montreal higher income tax rate - Annual pay raise is non existence - HR are terrible in handling work permit extension, we had to remind and keep chasing them for it

      Advice to Management

      - Appreciate your artists more by giving them more benefits and higher hourly rate - Stop exploiting fresh graduates through MPC Academy

I worked at MPC full-time (Less than a year)

      Pros

People. OT meals. Nice work environment

      Cons

There's people getting laid off every month with only 1 week notice. They don't respect contracts, I had 1 year contract got laid off after 5 months because there wasn't enough work. Most of the time you are expected to deliver feature film shot quality in your first render stage. Salary is very low, is not worth it. OT crazy hours, 70+ in crunch times.

      Advice to Management

I would fire the guy or team in charge of getting projects instead of laying off 40+ artists just because "there's not enough work".

I have been working at MPC for more than a year

      Pros

atmosphere can be very casual and fun, free beer every week, a lot of events after work for employees and sometimes for their families too

      Cons

seemingly unnecessary overtime sometimes, communication between departments is lacking, pay is a lot lower than other companies

I have been working at MPC for more than a year

      Pros

-fast pace environment -great and talented artist -get to work and amazing projects - definitely career boost - Amazing opportunity for fresh of college individuals or individuals with little experience - Beer Fridays nights and other social event all in companies time. -very relax environment.

      Cons

-the pipe line could use some work. -miscommunication between department sometimes gets in the way of getting the work done. -unrealistic deadlines at times. not a loot of room to grow given that they hold the MPC academy 3 -4 times a years to keep pay low. -low pay

      Advice to Management

      - reduced the amount of times that academy is being held, that way you can hold on to the better artist, you can afford to pay them more, and have their loyalty. - take better care of your employees.
