I have been working at MPI Research full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This position is simple, once you get comfortable handling animals. The project leaders are quite helpful, and the pay is great for someone who is just starting out.

    Cons

The group dynamic is difficult to move about in, and there is a running joke that this place is called "MP-High". Irritating, to say the least, but manageable. The hours can be long, and until you understand your schedule you shouldn't expect to be out of work until around 5:00 as a safety net. There is opportunity for advancement after 16 months, but many people burn out by that point.

    Pros

Great work experience for a statistician or SAS programmer

    Cons

This was part of my internship for grad school. The pay was a little low for someone with a BS degree.

    Pros

New ownership that is willing to innovate by improving processes and engaging employees. Great potential for career growth and opportunity to drive change.

    Cons

Due to the nature of the CRO business, the work requires diligence and great attention to detail. Also requires a high level of trustworthiness and ethics.

    Advice to Management

Continue to work on creating a positive culture!

    Pros

Interesting work environment. Plenty of opportunity to learn and create new processes.

    Cons

Not appreciated. The people who do the most get crapped on with terrible compensation in order to accommodate those who haven't been around as long and have no motivation to do more.

    Advice to Management

    Raises do help keep people.

    Pros

Under the new regime I've thoroughly enjoyed the transparency allotted to all employees. There are opportunities for advancement thru hard work and innovation. The sense of job security is also comforting. Benefits are competitive, and the option of furthering my education (Benefits: Tuition Reimbursement) is also appealing. I believe MPI Research is moving in the right direction.

    Cons

Some, not all Management is stuck in the past. Saying "that's how we've always done it" doesn't seem to cut it anymore. To be a successful company in the future, we need to plan for the future. Customer service is a big part of being a CRO. Again some, not all management needs to carry the "customer service" respect over to how they interact with their employees.

    Advice to Management

It is important to effectively train, respect and communicate with your employees. Expecting an employee to complete a task with minimal training isn't fair and is a set up for failure. To have a strong company, the base needs to be properly supported to allow growth.

    Pros

I was happy with my salary. There are some very smart and capable study directors. The variety of research occurring is interesting.

    Cons

One of the negatives is somewhat simply a hazard of the industry- many priorities shift rapidly day to day. E.g. getting input from a sponsor late Friday afternoon that they want a bunch of samples analyzed ASAP. In a perfect world, this would be ameliorated by a team atmosphere built on trust and sharing information efficiently. MPI is not in that world. Instead, managers provide very little information to their teams, leading to a profoundly alienating loss of autonomy. You are a cog in a data factory, and asking questions is severely penalized.

The atmosphere at MPI has been described as "tribal" by the interm CEO from the investment group that just bought them out (Charlie Harwood), and that is a fair critique.

    Advice to Management

Provide clear guidance to managers on basic standards for what constitutes minimal communication with their teams. Provide thoughtful input that goes beyond "don't tell jokes" so managers can learn how to handle professional communication in a diverse world (employees should not be subjected to "jokes" about how uncomfortable managers are when Middle Eastern people visit their church).
Much of training that is provided appears focused on providing the minimum dry information required to cover legal liabilities, and it does so in a way that is pretty inhumane and mechanical. You can't each true professional ethics, but you can provide an environment where the emphasis isn't on keeping up appearances above all else and fear of anyone different.

I worked at MPI Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has lots of room for advancement and is a great place to learn new skills, due to their exceptional training programs. In addition, the company truly does care about each employee and helps to do its best to balance work and life. The benefits are really good. It should also be noted that the people you work with truly do make the job enjoyable.

    Cons

Management seems distant and disconnected from laboratory activities. Sometimes the overtime does make it hard for the work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Take a more active role in getting to know your employees as well as the details of what they need to do their jobs. Don't just take other people's word.
