I worked at MPI Research full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Quite honestly, the people with whom you work will make or break your time here. I moved here for this job and met some of my best friends through MPI. For that, I am thankful.
Also, the cafeteria is pretty great.

    Cons

You're replaceable. And everyone knows that. And you're treated like it. Being a Research Technician is not a glamorous job by any means - you'll get sweaty, pooped and/or peed on by animals, and work so much overtime and holidays that you won't remember what having a social life that isn't centered around when you don't work weekends is like. Promotions are far and few. Favoritism is rampant. If you mess up, you'll more than likely be placed on probation or fired-again, that depends on how much they like you. The benefits are just okay. Same with the pay. Project leaders can be completely incompetent, and you'll wonder why the company pays to keep them on for knowing nothing about their studies and/or misleading technicians. (Some are great - don't get me wrong.)

    Advice to Management

It's not hard to take a crappy job and make it respectable. All you have to do is be more selective about who you hire and increase pay. Factories do it. MPI is essentially a research factory. Take the Research Technician role and make it respectable. People will stay longer and you won't have such a massive turnover rate. People will actually try harder and not mess up as much. But, continue the way you have, and you'll just keep hiring, hiring, hiring.

I have been working at MPI Research full-time

    Pros

Not that many. You will get your hours in.

    Cons

New hires starting pay is decent. The long term dedicated employees are forgotten. Example a new hire with a degree after 6 months can be making a little less than a dollar than an employee that has been there for 9 years.

    Advice to Management

Need to recognize the dedicated employees and get their pay to the full market value or they will start leaving.

I have been working at MPI Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people who work here are great and PTO is wonderful. Room for advancement. The work MPI does is rewarding.

    Cons

The pay, even once promoted to management or scientific roles.. is way below average. Moral is low and employee retention is very low.

    Advice to Management

Look at each role at MPI and see what competitors are paying. We continue to lose great talent to other companies simply because we do not even compare in pay nor are we willing to offer employees anything when they put their two weeks in.. we simply let the good ones walk out the door.. There are multiple Study Directors and Scientist looking at other companies currently and we cannot afford to lose them. It cost a lot more to train a new employee then to treat your current employees correctly. Compensation needs to be addressed asap to avoid a loss in quality and efficiency. Also when promoting someone, stop looking at their current pay..pay what the job is worth!

    Cons

They don't care about employees. Awful performance reviews. They do not give performance raises and have unclear goals. Promotions given to friends not based on skill

    Advice to Management

Promote based on skill. Reward your employees with recognition. Allow for advancement. Pay based on skills. Know your employees better

    Pros

Great benefits. Paid time off after first 3 months of working. Very flexible schedules. The workload is easy and not overly stressful.

    Cons

Low wage. The benefits are the primary reason people stay with the company when you work in one of the lower pay grade departments. Sometimes does not seem worth it.
