    Pros

The company has brought in new people to help drive change and culture. Company has a great CEO and solid strategy, but a long way to go.

    Cons

Too many long-term associates who don't want to change. Not enough resources to get work done.

    Advice to Management

Keep making changes throughout the organization. You're on the right path but not there yet.

I have been working at MSC Industrial Direct full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company culture. encouraging atmosphere. Continues education opportunities. Management cares and understands more now then ever. Great resources for product information and help.

    Cons

Long hours. Hard to balance work and personal time. Not making commission back to back months, make it hard to support yourself.

    Advice to Management

Remember it's the front lines of our organization that build customer relationships and company profitability. Not Salesforce. Reward them for what they bring to the table. Winning and losing opportunities both take time and resources. Yet not all are won and not all are lost.

I worked at MSC Industrial Direct full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The job is easy if you do it and are consistent. You can make commission if you hustle everyday. The metrics aren't hard to achieve - be on the phone for at least 2 hours and 15 minutes and make 15 contacts (learning something about the customer, finding a new opportunity or closing a sale) roughly 50 calls a day. Management doesn't want you placing orders etc but when you are talking with people and they want to order something it ruins the relationship if you send them elsewhere to get it done.
Base pay can be ok if you get hired in for sales, but if you transfer to the department the pay isn't ok.
If you need a job it's a decent company to work for.

    Cons

National telesales manager doesn't seem to get the pulse of his people
They hire lazy people that don't want to work hard and then complain they aren't making commission
Most supervisors are clueless and are not able to coach and help new people
High turnover of staff due to poor guidance and inflated goals i.e. Company growth goals are 3% but your goals to make commission are 15-20% year over year.
    No real room for advancement
    Team morale is low

    Advice to Management

If you have a top performer - reward them with a higher base pay and better commission structure or they will leave.

    Pros

    Work life balance
    Great management team
Great support from vendors and metal working team

    Cons

In the past management had visions but didn't share them well with their associates.

MSC is not well known outside of the metal working industry.

    Advice to Management

Continue to share your vision with all associates so we can all be working together to keep the boat moving forward.

Advertise and continue to invest in your marketing department

    Pros

    Excellent work-life balance, team members

    Cons

Opportunity for advancement and middle managers. Two of the things that MSC can improve on the most. Managers really do play favorites. Give them a sob story, you get a raise. Meanwhile, the hardest workers in your department are hung out to dry. And do not question them as there will be retribution.

    Advice to Management

Compensate your hardest workers. All the focus is on getting more associates instead of rewarding your senior associates. So inevitably, senior associates leave. This creates a vicious cycle of an undertrained, underperforming department. The work you wish to accomplish will never be completed if this continues.

I have been working at MSC Industrial Direct full-time

    Pros

Good benefits; health insurance options, 401K, vacation and sick time

    Cons

The base pay is poor, they are switching your accounts every 6 months and your commission is based on your last years' month sales. Commission is very difficult to obtain. No local room for advancement. Top heavy management, but that is where all the high paying jobs are available. Management has no regard for this position, but it is the money maker for the company. TSR's build sales and then an outside sales person gets the account. Your account deck is like a revolving door; not knowing what is in or out.

    Advice to Management

Pay needs to be significantly increased to be competitive. Reward the long term employees vs hiring new at $10K more. Understand the position and be thankful every time you go to the bank.
