    Pros

Challenging and rewarding projects. Great social atmosphere (happy hours, beer fridays, employee appreciation events, parties, etc.). Future work on the horizon is encouraging . Great and talented people to work with. On the forefront in design technology for multifamily projects, and keeping up with the curve for non-residential. Flexible hours to an extent, and ability to work from home. Profitable business. Good location near John Wayne airport and near freeways. High standards for projects. Competitive benefits and bonuses. Good reputation amongst peers. Excellent support for professional development and licensure.

    Cons

Shortage of experienced staff and high churn rate. Some supervisors lack true leadership skills and tend to micro manage. Lack of trust, and little to no transparency. ESOP and growth initiative programs were mostly failures or shelved by the partners. Lack in project diversity. Promotions and titles carry little weight outside of the firm, and seem somewhat arbitrary. Several layoffs over the last few months producing poor office morale. Lack of or little to no communication or timely guidance from senior staff and partners. Received client complaints regarding high fees and less than adequate drawing quality, although improving through the new QA/QC program. Improper work/life balance and staffing of projects appropriately, or proving help when requested. Less competitive wages compared to other firms in the area.

    Advice to Management

Retain or hire more experienced staff (20+years in the profession). Benchmark salaries of comparable firms in the area. Communicate much more frequently, especially during periods of layoffs. Provide more transparency and allow decision making to occur at lower levels (more centralized control and decentralized execution). Trust employees and give authority/ownership to projects, and provide more constructive feedback. Remove working silos or barriers to open up flexibility for development in all aspects of a project. Hold management accountable for failures and provide more rewards for successes. Staff projects more appropriately to reduce amounts of OT people are forced to work. Get out from behind the desk more and participate with the firm more through discussions, design charettes, progress reviews, etc. Lastly, discover new talents that people have that you may not know about and help aid developing of well-rounded individuals, not set on typecasting into roles permanently.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like actual human beings, not architecture robots. If I can't afford to rent an apartment within 60 minutes from the office because your salary is so low, DO NOT expect me to come in every Saturday.

I worked at MVE + Partners full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to get experience in all aspects of design & technology. MVE does great work and treats their staff pretty well for the most part (Annual bonuses, parties, ARE prep, sports, networking events, etc). They provide staff with all of the tools & software that most people don't have at other offices. MVE strives to be the best in design while promoting younger staff to become well rounded and becoming licensed. The people for the most part are friendly and the majority of staff is pretty well educated and versed in Revit. Technology & BIM plays a big part in MVE's vision in becoming a leader in the industry.

    Cons

Upper management can seem distant at times & some there seem to only look out for their own interests which can sometimes be to your expense or limit your career growth. PMs vary depending on who you work with and some are very ego driven. People tend to form into cliques and you sometimes have to be on your watch for what you say depending on who you are with. It can feel a little too corporate and not a very relaxed at times.

    Advice to Management

Find better ways to diversify and attract new work. Business development & marketing need to step up their strategies/ efforts to find new clients. Hold managers more accountable and be more transparent with what is going on the firm and conducting salary reviews. Reward & compensate those who not only do exceptional work, but are honest in providing valuable feedback that is in the best interest of the company and not something that is politically correct or "feels good."

    Pros

The staff is well diverse from the architects to the administration staff. The company does have many events from summer picnics to holiday galas which was always fun. Great office location near JW airport. Decent pay.

    Cons

Forget about getting a promotion based on hard work & merit. Also you can forget receiving the proper recognition when your superior will probably take the cake. It's about how good you brown-nose and how well you can make management like you. It's the game you must play to advance in this company.

    Advice to Management

None, the culture would need a total overhaul of management and system. That is the way they have worked for years and unfortunately I foresee that it will continue years going foward.

Fun place to work, people are great, great atmosphere and lots of activities to get into.
Great resources to help you advance in Revit and AREs

    Cons

Not a large variety of projects, or design styles to work with. They have one main client which dominates most of the projects in the office.

I have been working at MVE + Partners full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A very professional and respectful environment to work in. Upper management encourages all designers to become licensed and to participate in professional organizations. The recently opened Downtown Los Angeles office is perfectly located for use of public transit and is in close proximity to projects currently under construction.

    Cons

Projects are challenging and deadlines are stressful but this is beneficial to one's growth as an architect and a sign that the company has high standards for deliverables.

    Advice to Management

The efforts put forth to foster professional development and to maintain a healthy work environment is noticeable and appreciated. There is a high level of creativity and knowledge among those currently working here that could evolve into a progressive research and development team.

    Pros

It’s a great place to work. People are friendly, helpful, and creative. If you want to progress your talent, stay here to learn all kinds of things. There are many experienced people here and they can share with you. The firm has been doing good quality works.
In keeping your good health, you can join teams such as softball, run / walk after work once a week.
MVE has been built as such an environment for employees.
MVE Irvine and LA office have a spectacle view of the City, beautiful office interior and nice covered parking structure.

    Cons

It is less variety of project types, because 75% of Projects is Residential.

    Advice to Management

Work and join teams, events or meetings positively and actively, and also learn resources of the firm.

I have been working at MVE + Partners full-time

    Pros

The team at MVE is extremely talented, creative, and always finding ways to maximize value for their clients. The people are inspiring and fun to work with, and the firm consistently hosts employee appreciation events to nurture the culture and unify the team. The projects are exciting and diverse, and the company is currently expanding into new, emerging markets. Over the past year there has been emphasis on the growth of the firm and engagement of the employees that has resulted in many positive changes for the company. Overall, its a great place to work and the future looks bright for the firm.

    Cons

The office environment can use some updating to create a more collaborative work space. The firm could benefit by placing greater emphasis on sustainable design technology.

    Advice to Management

Continue to engage with your employees, build upon the foundation set forth over the past year, work toward creating a collaborative office environment, solidify the firm's presence in the LA region, take advantage of the momentum from recent successes, and touch base more regularly with current and past clients.
