KKR And Greg Ellis Have Destroyed MYOB

Oct 6, 2021 - Software Developer in Melbourne
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Quite a few smart developers in MYOB - People in most teams work efficiently and pull their weight - Great office location in Silicon Richmond - Flexible work from home arrangements - LinkedIn learning

      Cons

      - Development teams in Melbourne are being gutted and roles being sent off to Xi'an China (Thoughtworks Contractors) - High attrition levels due to work overload and rapid culture decline (since the previous CEO Tim Reed left) - Restructures, restructures they just don't seem to end! - The CEO Greg Ellis and the Executive Leadership Team don't care about staff concerns; just work harder - Software quality is declining rapidly due to high quality employees getting fed up and leaving the company (loss of domain knowledge) - Good middle management leaders who were quite capable are also leaving en-masse due to horrible Executive Leadership group attitudes

Great people but dysfunctional company that cant deliver

Aug 11, 2021 - Account Manager in Sydney

      Pros

The people are friendly and great to work with. It makes the many challenges in the role much more bearable and the people are the best part of the company. Good flexibility such as WFH. New management appear to be making more process than Tim Reed and co for progressing the company forward.

      Cons

Highly disorganised processes, poor training programs for a complex product set, has promised release of cloud platforms for years with no delivery. Seems to be an overall poor customer experience with this company as well because systems and processes around customer touch points prioritise revenue rather than positive customer experience. The product is too expensive for what it is and any informed accountant would not purchase it for their practice. Xero has a much more competitive solution overall.

      Fantastic people, frustrating leadership

      Pros

The people are absolutely fantastic, you will find somewhere to fit in here. It's extremely open to people and very accepting. There are lots of great ideas that everyone gets to contribute to. Work hours and locations are very flexible and cater to your needs.

      Cons

The management of systems and teams leaves a lot to be desired, with major team shifts every couple of months and system handovers occurring so often that knowledge falls into a void. The largest problems live within middle management that like to create silos of knowledge and ensure teams only focus on new features in a core product and pretend non-feature stream work doesn't exist (Even so far as to delete any tickets to avoid having to work on them). This is only a problem to the developers since they will be on the hook for any legacy services going boom despite not being given any time to implement more than a bandaid. There are teams dedicated to longer-term projects, but the majority are given lots of features that can be delivered in 2-3 months and then the problem space is given to another team to manage while they work on something new, creating the aforementioned knowledge gap after things have been handed over to the 5th team in the space of a year. This place is far from a death march, but it does suffer from project managers removing the team's agency while simultaneously applauding their capacity to give the team all they need to work. I'd walk in with open eyes.

      Cons

The pace of change is rapid, you need to be comfortable working with urgency and actively prioritising your efforts

      Great Company

Oct 6, 2021 - Quality Analyst in Mount Eden

      Pros

I love the people Salary is fair Work-life balance

      Cons

Business decisions from the higher-ups are sometimes questionable. They closed down a department (Practice) and a lot of people lost their jobs in the middle of the pandemic. But after a while, they hired people again. Why not repurpose the people to new roles?
