    Pros

Great coworkers, friendly and willing to help. Management tries to make it fun by holding monthly fun events ordering pizza, watching movies, etc.

    Cons

Unfortunately, as is typical of alot of IT departments the ones that are promoted to leadership roles are prior developers, etc with little management experience and unfortunately it is not a natural fit with their backgound/personality.

    Advice to Management

when the life of a product comes to an end, true leaders/managers should see the potential of existing employees and try to find places for their talent where they can contribute. Macerich managers unfortunately urge you instead to find another job.

I have been working at Macerich full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits plan when compared to the industry. In most cases interdepartmental relationships with other employees are pleasant and they actually willing to help if you ask.

    Cons

Segmented work environment where the left hand is not even aware of the right hands existence. Very limited communication with people outside of your work silo, often with people in the same office reporting to a different command structure. Too many layers of VP's and AVP's who seem to have no experience at a property level.

    Advice to Management

The company has changed from one where employee engagement, retention, training and development were key operational priorities to one where they are merely buzz words. Things like on-line collaboration tools or "Wow" programs have no affect on the field.

I have been working at Macerich full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

We have a great boss on site and it's an easy going work environment on the property level. Friendly co-workers on site.

    Cons

Employees are not appreciated by corporate. Corporate is only concerned with the big picture, not those who get them there.

    Advice to Management

    Notice employee's worth.

I worked at Macerich full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

While constantly changing depending on the new management over the years, there were years where this company was known as a family and small company feel. They spent time teaching their younger hires and most people knew each other. The pay was less than other competitors, but it was an overall good environment.

    Cons

The environment changed, but the salary was not commensurate with the change.

I worked at Macerich (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Well established, publicly held company with good assets. Lots of opportunities if you know the right people. Great resume and networking builder.

    Cons

Publicly held and like any companies of this size bureaucracies tend to get in the way of everyday activity. Just a cog in a massive machine.

    Advice to Management

Loyalty and valuing your long-standing employees should be much more of a priority. Turn over of key tenured employees is quite costly.

I have been working at Macerich full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, laid back work flow, a lot of catered luncheons, nice location, subsidized gym membership program

    Cons

Upper employees only care about themselves, no opportunities for training or development making this a dead-end job. Less than positive work environment due to excessive rudeness from co-workers. It seems that HR fails to take action with nasty employees who obstruct work production, these people should be replaced.

    Advice to Management

Start training the lower employees who express ambition so the company doesn't have to pay top dollar for outside talent

I have been working at Macerich full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very relaxed working environment. There are several volunteer opportunities and philanthropic events throughout the year if you like to be involved with the community. Decent healthcare plan.

    Cons

Promotion from within the company is not something that happens here. They almost always hire from outside and frown upon encouraging lower level employees wanting to move up.

    Advice to Management

Take advantage of the loyal and talented employees you already have working for you and promote from within.

I worked at Macerich full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The dept where I worked was full of mostly great people. There was a real team mentality and support from the C-suite down.
The Westcor team always seemed to try and maintain the values and culture to keep the Macerich culture of kill or be killed at bay.
If you worked in IT, the rest of the company trusted and believed in you to get things done. They really listened to the voice of the customer.

    Cons

Some within the team were rsther backstabbing and/or just plain incompetent. Yet, they were kept on because they hoodwinked the manager into liking them.
Some managers and up should have never gotten the position they were given. It's just that some senior personnel get too attached and won't fire them. Some of those people and managers are still there today.
The Macerich culture is what has ruined the brand, overall. The flippant nature of direction, without sharing with and empowering employees to make it reality, yet holding them accountable, has driven the company into a hole. I believe Macerich will end up being taken over by the likes of Simon or GGP within the decade, as they continue to back themselves into a smaller and smaller footprint to the point of irrelevancy.
HR is a complete joke. One HR senior person brags of her augmentation, yet removes good people on the flimsiest of circumstances. The rest of HR is as bad or worse.

    Advice to Management

Quit being so focused on only the wealthiest of clientelle, yet having no properties in those wealthiest areas.
Lay off the nepotism and culture of get along or move along. You need some people to shake that olive tree at SMP to get back to your former glory (without alienating the lower rank employees).
Replace HR, from the top down, with professional HR personnel who will see you through retention of great people. Instead of shuffling numbers to make the balance sheet and their friends look good.
