I worked at Macmillan Cancer Support full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The other people, both staff and volunteers, are fantastic - hugely caring and determined.
A growing organisation that feels very positive.
The cause is a great one and the organisation tries hard to connect the staff with the stories of people they've helped, which is incredibly inspiring.
Amazing to feel that your work has improved someone's life

    Cons

As with all charities there's a lack of money so people often juggle multiple projects at once and there's been a lack of investment in eg IT tools in the past.
Going through a big period of change, which can be unsettling for some

    Advice to Management

A bit more celebrate successes would keep people happy.
Keep sight of those excellent Macmillan values and you'll be fine

    Pros

It`s scale and size mean that it can make a really positive difference. The people that work there are generally very committed and often personally effected by the cause. Lots of different avenues for progression if one doesn`t become over-specialised. Well paid for third sector - which means it generally attracts good people

    Cons

Large organisation - can be slow to get things done. Sometimes things are pushed along because of an individuals`personal passion and belief it`s the right thing to do - even if it`s something doesn`t quite work as intended. Once specialised it can become difficult - though not impossible to progress.
