"Really great people and products - unclear direction"

    StarStarStarStarStar

I worked at Macmillan Education for more than 8 years

    Pros

    * There's a long, multi-decade commitment to producing really good content and a strong ethical backbone to the company * The people are smart and generally friendly and fun * Lines blur between roles in a useful way - you get a lot of experience and can move around the company easily

    Cons

    * Senior management and strategy has shifted strongly in recent years, with a ton of reorganization, leading to a lot of confusion and uncertainty * Promotions into management don't come with management training - a lot of well-intended people have no idea how to manage their employees, and it chases some good entry-level people away

I have been working at Macmillan Education full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits, mid-size publishing company not beholden to stockholders, solid ownership with good core values

    Cons

Lots of turnover over the past 3 years, college publishing unit seems to be looking for an identity, less long term focused now than in past

    I worked at Macmillan Education

    Pros

The company is filled with wonderful, intelligent, and talented colleagues. They make quality products that you can be proud of.

    Cons

The company is going through so many changes--leadership, restructuring, vision, goals--it often feels like total chaos. Can be a very frustrating work environment because of this. Also many old school employees who are stuck in old ways and reluctant to embrace new ideas or foster creativity.

    Advice to Management

Keep all of your talent by paying live able wages. The entry level salary is insulting and absurd for living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Invest in your employees and trust them to do well the job you hired them to do.

    I worked at Macmillan Education

    Pros

Autonomous work environment, no overbearing micromanagement. Overall, it is a relaxed setting for a sales floor. Enjoyed working with all of the people on my team.

    Cons

Company did not have a clear direction or plan and there was quite a bit of turnover/change in upper management. Commission plans and overall comp structure were constantly changing.

    I worked at Macmillan Education

    Pros

There are many wonderful people and authors at MHE. The company is a nice size, and it's privately owned which for many years allowed Bedford, Freeman & Worth to view investments over the long term rather than year by year. Their main offices are in the Flatiron district of New York and in the heart of Boston - wonderful locations.

    Cons

The company restructured a couple of years ago, and those making key decisions now have never worked in higher education publishing. 14% of staff was laid off last December, with another wave in the spring. At this point a huge percentage of people with history at the company have either been let go or have chosen to leave. Those who stayed have less freedom and more work than they did a year ago. The feeling of... community is drastically diminished. Many people who work there are not happy. But much of this is true for many of the Higher Ed publishers.
