I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Base pay is high. Good office culture, mostly. Open floor plan allows you to learn from senior folks in the office.

    Cons

The bank is stagnating and has failed to capitalize on a market upswing. Hard to move up unless you're Australian or have been at the firm since coming out of undergrad.

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time

    Pros

Macquarie' acquisition of Delaware Investments will be valuable in the long-run, but it would be visible until the senior management retires (15-20 years).

    Cons

Not team oriented at all. People just want to get their work done and seem to lack efficiency.

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Well stocked kitchen, No weekend work

    Cons

Managers are just who can sit in their chair the longest and only 1/10 can actually lead a team. Entirely too hard to learn how other areas work or how the company utilizes other departments.

    Advice to Management

Train your Mid to Senior Level managers, since they can't manage ALL your low level employees are constantly job hunting which breeds a terrible work environment.

    Pros

Better work life balance than other investment banks. They take you to conferences often.

    Cons

They made layoffs just before bonuses. Senior bankers aren't easy to work with at all. Bank rarely gets left lead mandates.

    Advice to Management

Start doing 360 reviews and you'll find that a lot of middle management bankers aren't as good as you would have expected

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

laid back culture and easy to excel on a relative basis at a bank with a below average talent base.

    Cons

Poor management and most US platforms are subscale to effectively compete
Unscrupulous leadership that thinks nothing of screwing employees for petty reasons
    Below average pay

    Advice to Management

Australia headquarters needs to get a better handle on US operations and hire better local leadership. Be willing to invest in the US or simply pull up your stakes and get out of the market.

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lot of perks, generally nice people on the teams. Hours were long but a pretty good environment to be in if you were working late.

    Cons

Company leadership was pretty bad, didn't do a good job communicating strategic/comp decisions with the broader group. There was a mass exodus for a couple years after some pretty bad bonus announcements.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job communicating decisions to the broader group, follow the rest of the street in terms of bonus, limitations on hours, weekends, etc.

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fresh fruit, easy to maintain life/work balance, steady hours, good salary & decent benefits. the company seems to be relatively stable, though the recent change in management . iPhones (too bad they are so locked down as to be practically a flip phone - why bother??). Some nice co-workers

    Cons

My department is a disaster in every way - from the most basic ways (dirty kitchen, sloppy people, bugs, managers who constantly speak with their mouths full of food, unprofessionally dressed people - sneakers, unshaven, not showered - some people actually smell) to more important ways (meeting timeliness, rudeness, saying "good morning"!) - the director practically grunts at you when he arrives in the morning at 9:45 am; it's pathetic).

there is no opportunity for advancement, or even low level training such as a $60 class is a huge ordeal to get approved. The "leaders" of the department that i work in lack leadership aptitude. they are deeply inefficient, fail to take the leadership mantle up, and alternately micromanage and then totally check out. it's a shockingly poor managed organization with leaders who don't even know everyone in the group - it's only a 50 person office; no excuse for that.

Further, there is a TON of work being outsourced to external consulting companies who are also not managed well or professional. the PM team is slightly more professional than the developers but they are overloaded. there is very limited chance of success of the current projects, particularly with so many of the project leaders jumping ship. this group seems to prefer and prioritize contractors (while paying a premium rate!) over full time employment. Unless you are a contractor who wants to add investment banking experience to your CV, i would bypass any opportunity here. I am actively looking for a new position and can not wait to leave. this is just a job; not a career enhancing role. there is very little that i can learn from this antiquated organization with poor technology .

    Advice to Management

I think that the management in Sydney has a very good handle on the shortcomings of this group, which is likely why they are on such a short leash (seriously, even ordering a pizza requires authorization!). Take a very good look at your leaders.

    Pros

Nice place to learn the business processes end - end from a technical point of view. Mature people. Established software. Standard Hours. Easy work.

    Cons

Aloof Business. In Transition. Uncertainty. Remote control from Australia. Managers have little leeway in taking independent decisions. Hard to get new technology in.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with times. Show loyalty to get loyalty.

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and benefits are great.' I'm in IBD. Most people are surprisingly nice and helpful. I've only disliked two people in 4 years.

    Cons

Non-responsive back office functions. Working printers are few are far between, for example, and no one seems to care. Another example is that AP rarely pays bills on time, causing more work for staff. Bonuses are terrible. .
