I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Better work life balance than most investment banks and opportunity to work closely with the buy-side funds groups.

    Cons

Pay has historically been below the Street, and work life balance still is not good relative to other career opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Focus on rewarding and retaining talent more.

I worked at Macquarie Group as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Company provided fruits, juices, soda, coffee, water. Could almost survive off the foods and beverages the firm had available. Now that I'm a former "employee" I miss it.

    Cons

Small company, little room for growth. Still contained the usual bureaucracy, especially due to it being a non-U.S. firm.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you've been doing, but maybe acknowledge the "little" people that keep the company afloat.

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The ability to work with a lot of intelligent people is definitely a plus. There are many options to create your career progression.

    Cons

It's an investment bank. A lot of layers to make a decision. Very inefficient processes in place. Extreme measures of cost cutting and significant controls on travel. Unless you are in a revenue producing role, you're pretty much a cog embedded in several cost centers.

    Pros

    There were good people overall

    Cons

Middle management were career managers with limited recent experience in delivery-focused roles. Their specialty was generating reports on what other people did.

    Advice to Management

Thin the herd of managers, reduce the admin and reporting overhead

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good team, flat culture, very chill and lively. Giving a lot of opportunities to junior people. Can freely speak with senior management, although the comments may not be heard

    Cons

Bad insurance policies. Not paying at all, bad bonus, not very good securities business. Management may not care about junior level

    Advice to Management

    Find better middle level management

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time

    Pros

    Better hours compared to competitors
Culture is more laid back and entrepreneurial
    Pay is decent

    Cons

    Not good at retaining talent
Too slow to be competitive in transactions
Upper management is limited to Australians
Heavily dependent on a handful of rainmakers

    Advice to Management

Reduce bureaucracy and processes to be more nimble, focus more on attracting VPs/SVPs capable of bringing in deals, diversify the cultures (global company but too Australian)

    Pros

Entrepreneurial and fun....if you get the right group can be fun. But be warned about IT and much of the HQ leadership at group head level is generally a bit inbred and tired now (Peter Principle?).

    Cons

Don't work in IT. The good people were let go. Now it's like watching Yes Minster meets House of Cards (US version). On one hand clueless and now it's just vicious political machinations without strategy or meaningful tech design or delivery. Purely numbers focused, leading to weak delivery, delays (happens when you only pay for inexperienced people) and are unaccountable.

    Advice to Management

See above. But also stop driving everything by the bottom line. Invest in smart people, some R&D and you might actually get some amazing tech benefits, that lead to serious trading, finance edgy & operational efficiency.
