    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You develop some techniques for sales and learn how to engage with customers. I also loved working in the mall which is close to my house and learning about the company culture, feeling like you are part of the Macy's family.

    Cons

The problem especially with my position is that it is hard to make commission. Also, their shoes are more averagely priced and customers tend to shop in the clearance rack so it is hard to make your commission. I only made an hourly rate. Also, the women's shoe stock room is very disorganized so it is hard to find shoes when demanding customers are waiting to get their shoes and service immediately.

    Advice to Management

There should always be a manager available every day to assist customers that are having problems.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Occasionally can get $$$ most discounts are done by “Macy’s Money”. Useable for 1 year only, but fades faster than that.

    Cons

Have to try for so many credit cards per hours worked. If you don’t they start scheduling you fewer hours.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employee's discount is OK, getting Macy's money, associates are friendly, good sale prices, love pre-sale.

    Cons

Duties for this job are never ending as you are the Core of the entire operation of the store, early means 2hours before the store opens, during the holidays as early as 4am,crazy hours. Not fair pay for the volume of work, training needs to be though

    Advice to Management

Offer fair wages and the retention rate will be higher, don't delegate management responsibility to ASTs, play your part and do the job you are being paid to do.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers & Management - the majority of the people I worked with were amazing. I am still close to one of my managers today and I consider her a mentor. If you work hard your managers will notice. This will make your experience better.
    Employee Discount
Growth - I worked very hard during my time at Macy's and within six months had already received two promotions, which ended me working in the cosmetics department.

    Cons

The Macy's I worked at forced us to join a Union. Being a part-time employee getting paid a quarter above minimum wage, a Union was something I did not want to pour my money into.
The customers; management at Macy's has given the customer way too much freedom for too long. Customers now know that if they treat an employee like dirt by complaining about something completely out of the stores control, they will be rewarded with a coupon or "Macy's Money" to help them remain loyal customers. This causes the employees to be treated like dirt on a consistent basis, and it is more prevalent during the holiday seasons.

    Advice to Management

Be more forceful with customers; the customer is not always right and it is time they were treated that way. Also, increase your starting base salary. A quarter above minimum wage is ridiculous for a sales job at Macy's (this is in Maryland); it's a large department store and when I worked there I had a multitude of tasks to complete within a shift and was always asked to stay overtime to help clean other departments. Minimum wage jobs should be left for teenager positions at small stores, not large department stores.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    I can't think of a single thing.

    Cons

I worked at the Bethesda location in Montgomery Mall. The pay was bad and the 'supervisors' patrolled the floor looking for reasons to give hell to the sales staff instead of looking for reasons to praise. One morning another clerk and I were screamed at by a supervisor because we were chatting before the store opened after finishing preparing our department for opening. I walked off that day and never looked back.

    Advice to Management

Your first level of supervisory personnel needs to learn that this is America and that treating staff like they're somewhere between slaves and indentured servants results in massive turnover. Some store departments were so overcrowded with inventory that it was impossible to keep up with clearing dressing rooms and returning items to where they belonged.
