Commission sales in shoe department made it both harder to earn a paycheck and easier to earn a paycheck. I averaged about $12/hour, more in the holidays. Then they changed the policy and made it more difficult as I was leaving. As I understand it, now you can only sell things in your department, and the percentage of commission went down. There was also a bonus if you hit your sales numbers, which has been eliminated.

Advice to Management
It really was no different than any other retail position. In any entry level position in a retail environment, management is very selective about what they share with their employees. For this reason, a lot of the policies don't make sense on the surface. I started working there when it was Marshall Field's, and I didn't agree with a LOT of the policies they changed and created. They lost a lot of business with selective vendors, many high end brands are not found at Macy's anymore because they don't want to be associated with the company.
