I have been working at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

As the Fine Jewelry Clerical it is only 25 hours a week usually a morning shift from 9am-1pm. Hours can vary.

    Cons

Unless there is an actual jewelry manager you do not get properly trained to do your job correctly. The store is filthy and there are no cleaning supplies. Not many engagement and wedding sets to choose from for customers to buy.

    Advice to Management

Properly train your associate how to do their job.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Definitely learned a lot about all aspects of retail. I was involved in merchandising (unloading the truck of new merchandise, changing the sale signs, all damages) and had to have knowledge of the sales side as I worked the floor as a non commission sales associate. I expanded my skills and I did enjoy the people I worked with. I was also given an opportunity to move up to take over the lead fine jewelry clerical position which I had to decline as I was going to put in my 2 weeks.

    Cons

My hours were not regular. I would go from working overtime at 40+ hours a week and 13 hour shifts to working 10 hours a week. One of the two managers in my department made working there unbearable. She would not remember any of my conflicts even if I reminded her daily for 2 weeks before. She continuously scheduled me when I could not work due to college classes. Not a healthy manager/employee relationship for anyone working in my department. There is no slack and I was often put in a place where I could physically be hurt simply because I am young and don't have a bad back to lift really heavy things. Now my back and knees are screwed. I was never thanked or praised for going above and beyond every day while the other sales associates sat on the counters and did nothing until a sale came up.

    Advice to Management

Fix the commission situation. The way it's set up now, the non commission associates don't get benefits for making sales even though they are doing double the work as a commission associate. And the whole "ringer" mode is screwed up and causes drama in the department with sales associates getting petty and angry if you don't ring up under their name so they get the sale even though you did the work. The system is not fair. I got paid way less than a sales associate even though I did the same if not more work than them.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Hard to fine one. The only thing I can think of is the peolpe I work with.

    Cons

No recognition, horrible pay, the constant reduction in core staff leaves those behind overworked. New hires get little training as Macy’s is driven to hit production goals that keep rising. Macy’s is computer driven yet MOST of its computers are well over 15 years old, just plain old cheapness on Macy’s part. A computer with 512 cannot run all the new programs office 2010, Lotus Notes etc. Everything is migrating to the intranet, which regularly crashes at peak times.

    Advice to Management

Quit the lip service and actually treat your associates better.

    Pros

easy to get hired, I cannot think in another reason of why you should work in this place. if you go to school this is a great place to make some money since they have a lot of jobs that can adjust to your schedule.

    Cons

Poor salary, disrespectful managers. They don't care about you, they just want to look good for their superiors. This place could be the worst place to spend your life working. There is some managers that will make your life miserable because they don't have a life. They don't even care if you get paid correctly or not. they just want you to work and that's it.

    Advice to Management

Please hire more respectful managers, people easy to work with. Listen to employees when they have something to say.
