I worked at Macy's as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good working environment. Great experience working on Holiday setup. The visual manager had given enough flexibility to manage the tasks in the time frame.

    Cons

The company Only hires seasonally for the holidays. The setup took only one month to complete. There should be more scope for seasonal projects round the year.

I have been working at Macy's (Less than a year)

    Pros

The team ethic between sales managers at my store was really good. I liked the program overall, the training was decent and they did a good job transitioning new managers from shadowing an experienced manager to being on their own. However as a college graduate who just spent four years getting an education I resented the amount of manual labor I had to do. As a manager in the Accessories/Juniors departments it was non-stop cleaning of clothing racks, picking up clothes out of the fitting rooms and hauling them around the three-story store. After working insane hours at Christmas I got fed up and found a new job. I think other smaller stores may have less of this problem, but the store I was in was big, had a lot of foot traffic, and was severely understaffed in the areas that needed help the most (any area with women's clothing or accessories).

    Cons

Store manager made department managers come in an hour early to straighten the store, after I left I heard they made managers come in on Saturdays to straighten, regardless of whether they were scheduled to work or not..

Flexible, great coworkers, organized company, nice environment, great merchandise, easy scheduling system

    Cons

Low pay, don't always get breaks you're supposed to get, conflicting manager policies, angry customers

    Pros

Room to be innovative and create solutions. Each store faces different obstacles requiring an open mind to solve each problem

    Cons

Lacks solid best practices and all solutions do not apply to every building. Requires out of the box thinking more often than not.

I worked at Macy's (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people there make the work experience a joy by being more like family than coworkers. The work schedule is flexible to your lifestyle.

    Cons

Macys did not have a great open door policy. When it comes to moving up in the company financially there was no room for negotiation. Raise increase per hour at the end of the year equaled to 35 cents to 50 cents max.

    Advice to Management

It's very important to be approachable to your employees. With years of hard work It's great to feel appreciated by your supervisors and treated as a team player.

    Pros

You get employee discounts, retail experience, the work hours can be flexible, the other employees are nice and welcoming, and the location is convenient

    Cons

The store is crowded, messy, kids run around unsupervised, customers complain a lot, people are constantly stealing because there is no one watching the fitting rooms

    Advice to Management

Hire someone to specifically watch the fitting rooms, have someone to check receipts at the door, and have security check all rooms before closing.
