I have been working at Macy's full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Outstanding ability to multi task, inspire, communicate, delegate and set clear expectations up, down and across the managerial group to maximize execution levels to highest level.

    Cons

Strive to create dynamic set ups to inspire customer sales which may go above and beyond a vendor or company direction.... my viewpoint being that that information is a starting point and/or minimum expectation vs. stopping point.

    Advice to Management

Meet commitments and have the knowledge and experience to properly access and commit to a timeline.... and always meet as closely as possible while communicating any new challenges or hurdles.

Coworkers steal your sales and are very rude to their fellow employees and customers. Its also very cliquey.

    Pros

flexable hours and i cant say much more

    Cons

lowest paid employees, management could care less, floors are hard to stand & walk on, lights make the store a HOT environment, miserable all the way through.

    Advice to Management

pay should be better, lighting fixures should not make humans uncomfortably hot, turn on the A/C!

    I worked at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Most of the people in the cosmetics department were fun to work with, the discount was great and the samples and whatnot from my particular cosmetic counter were awesome. I liked the online schedule management system, and the call-out system. It was always fun when someone who was open to your suggestions came in and stayed for a while. Of course playing with makeup all day, when we were permitted to experiment and learn, was fun.

    Cons

The pay wasn't compensatory for the work we were expected to do, especially when all the other counters were WAY understaffed and I would spend most of my shift away from my counter- which means I was making less in commission. The customers only cared about free gifts usually, lots of really unpleasant customers. I liked the idea that Macy's advertises to new employees about their inclusive culture but it, very much, falls short. The cosmetic department manager was a good person, but a very ineffective manager. The counter managers at some of the counters acted like what they had to say was the be-all-end-all and were very bossy. Overall, a pretty abusive place to work.

    Advice to Management

Don't just hire everyone who applies!! That's one of the reasons why you have such a high turnover rate! You guys should really value quality over quantity, I would have stayed if the department was properly managed and staffed. The cosmetics department manager was vindictive and sneaky. The store manager shouldn't be telling the employees that he doesn't care about their sales, goals or customer interactions, only how many credit cards they get. The reason the store is failing so badly is because you guys are relentless about credit cards and people don't want to be asked 5 times per transaction! Please treat your employees like adults and pay a decent wage/commission.

    Pros

Worked at the flagship store in CO...surprisingly LOVED my customers. Employee discounts are a perk.

    Cons

Toxic environment. Inadequate training. Unrealistic sales expectations, although I consistently exceeded them. No true growth nor development for associates. UPPER MANAGEMENT IS THE PROBLEM...this is the source of all of the cons.

    Advice to Management

Simple: treat your employees as human beings.
