I worked at Macy's (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice people throughout the store

    Cons

Hours can be low. Fluctuates with business needs. This is how retail often works.

I have been working at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fast paced (usually), varied, and easy-to-learn store environment
Really good about wage compliance (mandatory lunches or system locks you out, encouraged breaks)
    Paid training is useful
Mall benefits- often get slight discount in other stores etc
    Good advancement opportunities

    Cons

    Close to minimum wage
On your feet at all times, have to be "doing something" or risk getting reprimanded (often, employees leave other things unfinished so when customers slow down they have tasks to do while they wait)
    Hours/departments aren't super flexible

    Advice to Management

Don't rely on the computer system so much for scheduling, particularly minors get locked out because there are no open shifts even though there are plenty of places they can be helpful. Also, allow seating (even if it's just leaning on stools) for associates at registers to minimize fatigue.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Discount okay. Flexible schedule. Hours.

    Cons

Setting up the shoe department to be like shoe warehouse was a horrible decision! People easily steal shoes since their sizes are right there and since the displays are so high you can't see all the customers. Plus, you cannot engage with customers like you used to. The customers throw all the stuff in the boxes on the floor, change the sizes in the boxes and there is always a missing shoe every day. Push the Macy's card every sale no matter what. Do not ever get sick and call in from 11/24-12/31 or else you'll lose 4 points from your 9 point limit each day. If you get to zero you're gone. Not enough staff for holidays in any department. Low starting pay and no commission on shoes anymore. Department terribly dirty but you're not expected to really clean any of it. I could go on...

    Advice to Management

Vacuum the entire store every night! Don't let your employees bring their vaping toys into the store ever, especially shoes since I know they vape in the stockroom on top of texting all day. Change the format back to displaying one shoe and get rid of the DSW idea unless you're okay with having people walk away with your shoes.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people were awesome. Management worked with you, as far as hours and time off.

    Cons

The pay could of been better. Moves and projects needed to be planned better. Hours at times were very long, to make up for bad planning.

    Advice to Management

Review floor moves before moving merchandise to make sure it fits. Would save a lot of wasted time and energy.

    Spread too thin

Here is just one word satisfaction.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only thing was the weekly paychecks

    Cons

Mostly horrible management. Credit Cards are terrible and the pressure put on employees to solicit them was worse.

    Advice to Management

Get your head out of the clouds and get down to earth with your employees personally care about their well being. Quit caring about the numbers and pay more attention to the situations that need tending to. Also start beleiving the employees more over the customers.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I was the person setting up sales, changing prices, and merchandising the store. It was great being able to work independently in my own section, but we still got to know our team well. Management was always friendly and there to help when I needed.

Every so often we would get bagels and doughnuts in the morning, as well as occasional pot lucks.

    Cons

If you're looking for a mindless, repetitive, but easy job, you've found it. Let's just say it can get pretty boring.

    Pros

The potential is there to make good money at a good location. Great hours and work doesn't follow you home.

    Cons

Terrible management and training. Company is clearly struggling by being stuck in their old ways. The potential is there to succeed but only if you are train from outside the company and don't ask questions.
