    I worked at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Macy money, lunch breaks, customers

    Cons

Macys just did away with 20 positions in the Wyoming Valley Mall,, Wilkes-Barre, Pa Store. Some needed to go, but why are you hiring to replace them. Also no qpons on clearance. What’s that about?

    Advice to Management

Smarten up because you are killing business and putting unnecessary pressure on the employees left

I worked at Macy's (More than a year)

    Pros

    Learned a lot about retail

    Cons

Although i worked at Macy's longer ago than 2013, at the time, the managers worked a lot. Although this wasn't bad at first, it became apparent that to really get ahead you had to manage one of their primary departments (Men's being the first of these).

    Advice to Management

be ready to work a LOT

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to meet new friends. That's about all that I can think of for Pros for this company/staff/management. You will get to know who you are as a person because you will be tested every day.

    Cons

You are promised new opportunities to move up and that never happens because the current management will ether need to quit or retire and that doesn't happen often. When I left, management had a minimum of 5 years to max 40 years of working at a management position so you can see your chance of moving up will take forever.

You work your butt off every day and are not recognized for it. Management will ask you to stay longer and work harder because the turnover is incredibly high.

    Holidays:
Thanksgiving....forget about it. You have to come in at 5pm so you miss dinner and time with your family. You most likely will work a 10-12 hour shift and be asked to come back 6 hours later to work again.

Christmas is the same way. Close is at 5pm Christmas Eve so you can forget about Christmas dinner.

This is the same with Easter and any other major holiday.

Shifts are all over the place. The minimum is 4 hours or they don't want you to come in but will always ask you to stay longer than normal. You don't get time and a half.

You have weekly and monthly reviews that compare you to your other associate and they always push you to sell more, sell at a higher dollar amount and open as many credit card accounts as you can. The only benefit to all this hard work is your name and %'s are higher on the sheet than other associates. This sheet is posted on the wall and you don't get any extra money/raise/PTO...nothing.

I come from the management side and let me tell you the customers that come in are terrible to the staff. You will be looked down at, if something breaks it's your personal fault and management will most always give that customer a discount or swap out the item to make the customer happy even if it means loosing money as a department store. That broken item will have to be damaged out and sent out and that all costs money.

I could go on and on. Macys needs to figure it out. If they can't see why there is so much turnover they are going to go down the tubes just like JC-P. Treat your employees with respect, thank them everyday, and do something (bonus/raise) to show them they should stay.
