    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ability for part timers to increase hours, but assigned base hours (12-20 with a heavy emphasis on 12) are way to low. The merchandise is nice and the discount helps.

    Cons

Way too much emphasis on getting customers to open charge accounts and contribute to charities and not enough checking on how the seemingly high performing associates in these areas are getting where they are getting. Coaching sessions with department manager are far too negative. Management needs to realize that not all negative comments made by customers are true and the employee complained about should have some recourse. Return policy needs to be tightened - store should not be taking back items that have been used for months, if not years. Communication concerning rule and policy changes between management and associates needs to improve. Job does not pay enough to warrant buying uniforms (all black clothes).

    Advice to Management

Listen more to employee suggestions. Allow the employee some recourse when he/she receives a customer complaint. Treat employees equally. Do not "spy" on associates, i.e., hide behind fixtures to observe or stand 50 feet away so as not to be seen and write up an employee who says something to another associate for socializing when you could not hear what was said - was the conversation about business? There is no job where communication between employees is totally not necessary.
