    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a good place to start if you're looking for a career in fashion or retail. Depending on your store, the employees I met were generally helpful and friendly.

    Cons

Low starting pay and having to work most weekends/holidays. It took me a while to learn to navigate and use the scheduling system. I wouldn't recommend it for a long-term career.

    Advice to Management

Be available to employees and avoid cliques

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some very nice people to work with. Some occasional good discounts.

    Cons

Management was incapable of managing people. Scheduling system was nothing but frustrating. Atmosphere

    Advice to Management

Personnel management is not accomplished by entering data in a computer and crosding one's fingers that the outcome will be good.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For the most part it's an easy job. Flexible schedule. Good employee discount.

    Cons

Customers get what they want when they complain. Extended hours are VERY slow. Too many customer promotions going on at the same time...confuse the customers.

    Advice to Management

    Better communication.

Nice company, clean environment, employee discount.

    Cons

odd hours, after close hours, quota, you will work around the clock and off the clock sometimes to meet deadlines

    Advice to Management

Stop and listen, help your middle managers make better managers of themselves and those they train

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Discounts are good with some really good bargains. You work with some good friendly people. Many opportunities to creatively schedule with your colleagues.

    Cons

Management deficiencies abound. Computerized scheduling. Cold corporate atmosphere. You are essentially a warm body who is expected to greet customers, sell, handle customer service, try to work a convoluted schedule with little or no guidance or support from management. Merchandise is marked up and then sold via discounts, coupons and constant promotions meant to convey the message of a great deal. Sometimes the essentials of the promotions are not clearly conveyed, so customers and salespeople are left to figure it out.

    Advice to Management

Show some genuine interest in your people. Listen to your people. Get a new phone system.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Discounts and other means to purchase products are a plus. Most associates were enjoyable to work with. Generally the customers were pleasant and customer loyalty is strong.

    Cons

Arbitrary scheduling process. Management somewhat detached from the needs of their subordinates. You have to learn lots of basic stuff on your own. Hey, it's twenty first century retail, where merchandise is overloaded on the floor, marked up then marked down to give the appearance of a discount. And then there are the "amateur" shoppers who are rude, ill-mannered and trained to demand the cheapest possible price to the point of being obnoxious. That's not MAGIC.

    Advice to Management

Listen, really listen to your employees. Understand that people have a life apart from their vocation. Don't preach enthusiasm, practice it. Don't compromise your image and philosophy by trying to be a WALMART by opening weird hours to cater to the shopper culture. ( open 65 straight hours before Christmas?)

    Pros

Discount, good training courses, fun shopping atmosphere , quality of merchandise, coaching associates to put customers number 1,

    Cons

Scorecards for associates are not accurate. Very unfair. Sm's work lots of 6-7 day stretches, expectations of sales managers to run their depts and do 2 observations a day plus answer phone , plus be EIC, plus put out fires, plus interviews, plus deal with associate issues , plus ensure sales set, markdowns complete and moved / signed properly....workload tough. unless you work ever day of the week! Which most managers come in on days off to get work done.

    Advice to Management
