    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

THERE WERE MANY PROS SUCH AS COMMISION, MEETING FRIENDLY PEOPLE, GREAT MANAGER, ETC. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND WORKING FOR THIS COMPANY

    Cons

Some of the con's were that the hours sometimes seemed all over the place and sometimes there was a lack of communication.

    Advice to Management

U would recommend that they communicate a lot better with their employees so that there will be no confusion in the future

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some flexibility on your schedule, get to work with some really great people and working on the start team means you get off early. The work/life balance can actually be pretty could, except for during the holidays.

    Cons

Macy's pay and insurance is terrible. You will need a second job if you need to support yourself financially. While most of the people who work in the store with you are great, corporate couldn't care less about it's employees. They cut jobs, hours and close down stores every year.

    Cons

Bad management. Not organized . No set schedule.

    Advice to Management

Be fair. Should be no favorarism

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    20% back-office discount after coupons.
See the latest trends first hand.
    Get advance notice of sales.
Manage your time pretty well with MySchedulePlus.

    Cons

    Very low pay.
Raises are minimal (about .50 a year if you have an outstanding performance review)
Have to deal with difficult customers all day.

    Advice to Management

Help the employees when they ask for it. They don't ask unless they really need it, and when they don't get help they stop asking for it and just become upset.

Give the new employees a little help for their first day on the sales floor. A buddy system would be great. Sitting in an office and going through computer generated scenarios alone is completely different from actually working a register with customers who are in a rush.

On sale days, there is no need to extend store hours at stores like the one I worked at in Redmond, WA. The town goes to bed at 8 or 9 o'clock. Please stop making the associates stand around bored stiff until 11pm or midnight. I can't imagine that the ONE customer who comes in at that time buys enough to pay for everyone who is working and all the electricity and whatnot as well.

"Diverse community of employees, supported in making customers happy, elitist management"

I have been working at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working with the public to make them happy buying affordable clothing, cosmetics, fragrances, textiles, kitchenwares and furniture. "Empowered" to do whatever it takes (within reason) to make customers feel the "magic" of Macy's without the fear of being corrected by a supervisor or manager. Opportunity to work as hard or as little as one wishes. Flexible work hours and easy-to-use scheduling system. Weekly paychecks.

    Cons

Awful pay, poor on-the-job training, elitist class attitude of management over non-management employees, sales associates only evaluated and functionally appreciated for meeting sales goals and opening Macy's Rewards accounts. Phony, childish, intelligence insulting "rewards" and "incentives" to create the illusion of a happy workplace. Management methods very old fashioned. Sales and support staff viewed by management as an underclass that needs to be pacified but not respected for intelligence. Management rarely "on the floor" to support customer needs. The company has cut back on the number of sales and support employees, thus customers often find themselves on the sales floor with no associates to help them or too many customers for the number of available associates. Good ideas and consistent effort not rewarded with increased number of work hours or increased pay. Weak employees permitted to remain on staff and not given reduced work hours. Management is not objective and (like most companies) play favorites with employees. Punitive action taken for not taking required lunch breaks within five hours of start time but not given sales support when there is high customer demand and no other sales associates to cover the floor while one goes on the required lunch break in a timely manner. Managers rarely step in to help sales associates on the sales floor. Very few full-time positions.

    Advice to Management

Get off your superior mind set and demonstrate your ability to lead your employees by "joining" those you supervise in what they do on a daily basis to make the MAGIC of Macy's for customers. This is retail, not pharmaceutical research, and your skills are not any better or different than the sales and support associates you supervise. Provide better training and be more "present" on the sales floor by participating in the work of those you supervise. You need to keep a better eye on what associates are doing and you cannot do that in your office or by only mingling with other management. Evaluate associates work performance on more than just meeting sales goals and opening Macy's accounts. Each associate makes a unique contribution to the sales team. Listen to associates when they have concerns about co-workers and be objective when working with a crew. Don't show favorites.

  9. "quasi-comfortable work environment despite the SUPER-corporate structure that saturates every part of the company."

    I worked at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Effective and simple training processes, and almost every aspect of a sales position should be self-explanatory.

    Cons

There are the inevitable retail employees/managers/customers who are dedicated to making things much worse than they need to be. I've found, at the 2 stores I've worked at, that the pressure in various situations from management can be excessive, but we have to realize it's just because they're under pressure from at least a couple of their own bosses(SUPER-corporate structure).

    Advice to Management

Spend more time hiring, training, and actually getting to know the people in your departments. Happy employees do better work. Without being asked.
