I have been working at Macy's full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great workplace overall and Good culture.

    Cons

Unfair supervisor .... and the supervisor is able to get by despite unfairness.

    Advice to Management

Please take action against unfair supervisors ..... AS no sufficient action is taken - it is difficult to stick with a nice company like Macys - because of unfair supervisor. Discrimination of some sort continues often in more subtle ways ....

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

During my time there the management were really concerned about maintaining work-life balance, enough so that HR would ask why if you worked daily overtime. Lots of smart people and a generally collegial atmosphere.

    Cons

The company is spread out, with important management in four cities and some competing fiefdoms between the various locations can make it hard to get important things done.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone I worked with was really nice and helpful. If it wasn't for them, I would not have stayed as long. Additionally, I did learn a lot (though, not through the help of mentors or instructors but rather through my own experience.)

    Cons

It's corporate. They will want you to open credit cards first and foremost, they'll want you to almost literally grab customers to "show them something", and even if your numbers are killer and you clock out 2 minutes early, that's what you'll hear about.

    Advice to Management

Take time to help employees that show promise, make your customers feel comfortable not like they would rather die than make eye contact with an employee.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

gratis, formal training, events, commission, cash tips, samples, consistent hours, interactive schedules, insurance, 401k, DJ, store wide events with entertainment and food, monthly employee parties, help from vendors

    Cons

never enough cleaning supplies, attendance point system, inconsistent product shipment, stockroom is dangerous, bathrooms are disgusting, not enough department supplies, not enough store training, unfair raises, not enough training for all brands, not knowing the vendor schedules,

    Advice to Management

more in depth training for new hires, more attendance points to begin with, better and fair raises, hold your counter managers accountable, cold calling doesn't get clients in, have more of the store support events in every department,

    Pros

People are fantastic. Routine feedback allows for one to stay engaged. Rewards the team for results. Flexible schedule. Lots to love

    Cons

Annual decrease in sales leads to loss of relevance. Business model is completely broken and there doesn't seem to be a plan to turn this around.

    Advice to Management

    Staff the stores

    I worked at Macy's part-time

    Pros

    Discounts were good on makeup

    Cons

Worst place to work. Not enough coverage and therefore 1 sales associate is left covering a whole department. Sometimes the line gets so long that you get stuck at the register for hours and since you're the only one there you don't have time to do other things (such as clean the fitting room, work on go backs, take your break) and customers end up complaining. There is literally nothing you can do. For the amount you have to do and put up with, you definitely don't get paid enough.

    Advice to Management

Stop ignoring the fact that you know you need more coverage. One sales associate per department is not enough. Especially when there's call outs

I have been working at Macy's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Worked in the back of the store. Not much customer interaction.

    Cons

No hours, i was off the schedule for three weeks! Don't know why i stayed. Managers are incompetent, they themselves don't understand the process, and scramble to actually work only when the big wigs visit the store.

    Advice to Management

Macy's will go bankrupt, it is inevitable.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you are a courteous, responsible employee you will be asked to pick up additional shifts and possibly be offered a Specialist position. Younger associates are encouraged to move up in the company.

    Cons

More senior, dedicated and well-experienced employees are often overlooked for career advancing opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Executive Management should not discriminate as openly as they are.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-My store in Freehold, NJ, was so crazy that it prepared me for the absolute worst in retail
-Helpful and convenient online scheduling system allows you to swap/pick up shifts with fellow employees; makes it easy to make your own schedule

    Cons

-Management cares about the customer's happiness, which is great, but ONLY the customer's happiness. Little is done to improve employee's satisfaction in the workplace.
    -Employees are very expendable

    Advice to Management

Value and treat your employees with respect! For many of them, this is more than just a job.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Gratis and samples
Good networking grounds between cosmetic brands

    Cons

    Terrible management, miserable pay
    Limited opportunities
    Awful trainings
    Constant miscommunication
    Disorganized leadership
Lack of supplies to provide excellent customer service

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees who have extensive experience and education by paying them a decent living wage. Do not tell your employees to enforce store policies that you don't enforce yourself and in turn make your employees look bad in front of belligerent customers. Making everyday exceptions for difficult and disrespectful individuals hurts the store and commission-based sales associates. The customer does come first, but when will Macy's defend the employee and protect its assets the same way the employee is expected to protect the store from abusive returns/theft/inappropriate behavior? Overall, I have not experienced a supportive workplace.... I'm inspired to leave.
