I worked at Macy's full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Some flexibility in work hours

    Cons

Pay is low. After being transferred from one Macy's to another, the Short Pump store started off strong. After a few years, the older managers were forced out and replaced with younger managers who are not professional and have not idea what their job is as a manager.

I have been working at Macy's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Coworkers, commissions, PTO, you meet amazing customers,

    Cons

Company only cares about numbers. People don’t shop in stores much anymore so sales are being thrown at you everyday and you’re underpaid for what you do. Management may not be the best.

I worked at Macy's full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great discount on cosmetics, free cosmetics from brand training, and a nice selection of cosmetic and skincare brands.

    Cons

I started working there in March and was injured because my department manager told me to take old testers and customer returns out of the hazardous waste cosmetics bins and make samples of the products taken from there for customers. I had hives for seven days and I reported the incident to OSHA and after the investigation began the management started bullying and harassing me relentlessly. I reported the incidents and issues that I had with the managers to HR multiple times, in particular the incident where my department manager lied and fabricated an incident where I didn’t say hello to the store manager and I wasn’t there on that day, and HR only sided with the management and wouldn’t tell me how they investigated anything. You actually need to get a supina from the police to actually have that information from the case that you file released to you which is insane. Last week I had two panic attacks while I was at work and I attempted self harm, thankfully a customer stopped me and was able to calm me down. Only two of the managers who were awesome checked on me and one walked me to my car and made sure I got home safely. I was hospitalized for four days afterwards and I was still receiving harassment from my department manager over the phone. She called me to see why I was hospitalized even though in my email to the leave of absence representative that if they had any questions to contact my physician. This woman who caused my breakdown wouldn’t relent even while I was on medical leave. It didn’t matter what I did she always had an issue with it after I reported her gross negligence which could have harmed customers that’s why I reported the incident in the first place. I’ve worked in the retail industry for over eight years because it was the only industry that worked with my school schedule while I was in college and I’ve worked in multiple stores and for multiple companies and this is the first job that broke me and even after I quit they still won’t leave me alone and I according to my old coworkers she’s now taking her frustrations out on two other people in my department and one of them had a panic attack and I’m extremely concerned for her.

I have been working at Macy's part-time for less than a year

    Pros

I got a lot of experience in many different departments. I loved working fulfillment. Coworkers were friendly for the most part, and it was easy to make fast friends.

    Cons

Management while I was there was awful. We were not treated like people who had lives. It was all about how the store was kept, how we presented ourselves to customers, how many Macy's cards we were opening, etc.

Macy's invests a lot in developing it's peoples skills, with a huge emphasis on coaching. All Management and sales staff are constantly being observed and coached.

    Cons

    Management is largely inexperienced

I worked at Macy's for less than a year

    Pros

I loved my time at Macy's especially in the shoe department where you make your hourly wage plus commission on the shoes you sell. It's slightly overwhelming at first but within 2 weeks you get the hang of things.

    Cons

The love to push you to open credit cards and in all honesty, people are trying to build their credit up so it's really hard to talk people into opening credit cards espeically when frequent Macy's shoppers already have one and people that aren't frequent shoppers will probably never use it if they did get one.

I worked at Macy's part-time for more than 3 years

Discounts and incentives, flexibility in working different departments, scheduling system online.

    Cons

Sales goals, micromanaging, too much "customer is always right" mentality, pressure to open store credit cards.

I have been working at Macy's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The experience of working at Macy's can be fantastic when you are working for the right person. I had the pleasure of working for two dynamic and engaging store managers. Having the right leadership in place made working long days much more rewarding. The company also offers competitive pay, opportunity for advancement, and good benefits.

    Cons

As the owner of merchandising within the building you will work many 6 day work weeks. Long days are normal and make work/life balance very challenging. The job, often times, feels quite thankless as most people only take notice when things go wrong. The industry of retail is going through a dramatic reinvent and unfortunately cuts to payroll mean that people are asked to do more than what can be accomplished in a normal work week.
