I worked at Macy's (Less than a year)

    Pros

I loved my time at Macy's especially in the shoe department where you make your hourly wage plus commission on the shoes you sell. It's slightly overwhelming at first but within 2 weeks you get the hang of things.

    Cons

The love to push you to open credit cards and in all honesty, people are trying to build their credit up so it's really hard to talk people into opening credit cards espeically when frequent Macy's shoppers already have one and people that aren't frequent shoppers will probably never use it if they did get one.

    Advice to Management

I worked at the colonial heights, virginia location and I would tell management to actually come downstairs and get to know your colleagues. I work there for several months and the department manager didn't even know my name. It's ridiculous. Shoes managers are awesome though!

I have been working at Macy's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The experience of working at Macy's can be fantastic when you are working for the right person. I had the pleasure of working for two dynamic and engaging store managers. Having the right leadership in place made working long days much more rewarding. The company also offers competitive pay, opportunity for advancement, and good benefits.

    Cons

As the owner of merchandising within the building you will work many 6 day work weeks. Long days are normal and make work/life balance very challenging. The job, often times, feels quite thankless as most people only take notice when things go wrong. The industry of retail is going through a dramatic reinvent and unfortunately cuts to payroll mean that people are asked to do more than what can be accomplished in a normal work week.

    Advice to Management

There has to be significant reinvestment into brick and mortar functions, people, and payroll to fuel growth in the store.

    Pros

    Great co workers
    Feels like family
Flexible hours/ make your own schedule

    Cons

    Associate discount/ discount card
Customers are always right which means no backing even if associate is actually right

    Advice to Management

Even with keeping with the customer always being right, go through steps of making sure that is the case.

    Pros

the employee discount, some of the employees were really nice, was able to pick up a lot of extra shifts

    Cons

the pay is horrible, the commission is a joke (1%), they expect you to sell and make the company a lot of money and when you do you aren't compensated properly for it

    Advice to Management

Raise the pay and maybe the moral of the employees will increase. Increase the commission rates and the employees are more likely to want to sell more products for your company with a smile on their face.
