I have been working at Macy's full-time (More than a year)
The company provides great benefits to all executives, including a 401K, 6 months short term disability fully paid, and 3 weeks of paid time off. The employee discount and other incentive programs are also great.
Sales supervisor is supposed to be a training position in which you spend six to eighteen months working under a sales manager mentor to learn how to be a sales manager at Macy's. When they feel you are ready your store manager will recommend you for promotion. The cons with this is that it is completely up to your store manager if you can move anywhere within the company, so if you do not have a good relationship you cannot move forward with the company. It is much harder to move to a sales manager position as a sales supervisor than it is coming in as an external hire. My district vice president of stores shared a startling fact, "70% of sales supervisors never become sales managers."
Advice to Management
The promotion system is broken, take the time to re-evaluate it so those you have groomed from within do not feel that there is no future with the company. Also cutting back on HR personal at the store level is detrimental to your people.
