    I worked at Macy's part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good job for someone who is young and wanting to gain customer service and basic sales experience

    - Flexible hours (to work around school schedule, for example); online system allows you to pick shifts that fit your schedule

    - Friendly and helpful coworkers in general, and they were even willing to switch shifts with you if something came up; also, I got more hours by making friends/acquaintances with coworkers because if they couldn't work, they'd ask me to work for them

    - More hours typically become available around the holiday season, namely before Christmas, so if you're looking for some extra holiday cash, it's nice; but other than that, there weren't a whole lot of hours available (at least when and where I worked)

    - ***20% EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT... even on TOP of already reduced prices; you wouldn't believe what kind of "steals" I got, especially from shopping the clearance racks

    Cons

    - Pay is awful at minimum wage; my pay only increased once (from $7.50 to $7.75) as a result of a minimum wage increase; all my hard work went unrewarded with the exception of verbal praise every now and then

    - Throughout 2 and a half years of dedicated service, I was NEVER offered a raise

    - Not enough hours

    - Online system for picking up shifts is horrible because there were never ENOUGH shifts available for part time/flex time employees; you are at the "bottom of the totem pole" so to speak

    - No benefits of any kind offered for "Flex Team" (Part Time Contingent), which basically means that you're not guaranteed a set amount of hours, which is really bogus; hours per week ranged anywhere from 0-30-ish but typically did not get above 20

    - Sales goals given are usually unrealistic expectations; management is always pushing sales and ESPECIALLY Macy's credit card applications, which they like to refer to as "Loyalty," but it seems that MOST of the customers who shop at Macy's ALREADY HAVE their credit card!

    - And last but not least, if you work in any of the women's clothing departments in particular, the fitting rooms are a pain to clean because they get awfully messy very fast; and not to mention, clothing is always getting moved around a lot by customers, so it has to be transported from one department to another all the time

    Advice to Management

Be more fair to employees and especially to those who have given their time and dedication to the company. Recognize and reward those who are working hard by giving them raises. Don't keep hiring new employees when you already have employees who are looking for more hours; employees hate that.

I have been working at Macy's part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility; working different shifts, you can pick up shifts online [or on the registers/computers at work] or advertise shifts you do not want to other people to pick up all without having to ask a manager or otherwise.

    Cons

Not paid enough for the expected work. We have sales goals even in non-commissioned areas. Therefore equaling in no teamwork between associates who have to take care of fixing up areas or taking care of fitting rooms. Although that is when you have more than one person in an area. Lately, you have no time to think because you will be running around trying to take care of customers, clean your never ending fitting rooms, pick up the clearance racks, fold clothes, use the register, open accounts, etc.. A lot of the time you are too busy you have to choose to do one or the other and most people choose sales so the area because a disaster zone or you choose your area and next week have to wait for your manager to go over your scorecard to tell you are not doing anything right.

Scorecards only show you how you are doing in sales. Nothing else will get acknowledged. You will feel like you are in school every week you go over your scorecard and how you can do better.

Managers are dishonest, not helpful, negative, disrespectful, use favoritism, talk about other associates behind backs, unapproachable, point fingers, do not check up on areas, stay in their office and talk all day, do not listen to others opinions and therefore do not do their jobs.

There is rare chance you can have a career opportunity here. No one lets you know when there are opportunities and even then your scorecard will keep you from ever advancing.

    Advice to Management

    Treat associates with respect.
