    I worked at Macy's full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people. I met and worked with some amazing people at Macy's. Most managers cared about you as a person.

    Cons

The cutbacks. Every year the company goes through restructure and you never know if/when you'll be laid off.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There were several things I really enjoyed during me short time there...1) I can't say enough good things about the scheduling system. You are in control and it's all in black and white. 2) There is no mystery or place for favoritism. I'm my experience, most conflicts at work result from people worrying more about what other employees are doing that doing the job at hand. I didn't feel that at Macy's. Everyone is responsible for themselves and knows what is expected. I felt like I could approach any of the staff and be heard. The training was very thorough and done on a computer in the store. Unfortunately my time was cut short due to an emergency appendectomy. I really wish I could have spent more time at Macy's. The store manager makes a point to interact with all the employees and has a positive influence. Last but not least, 20% employee discount.

    Cons

I think it may be beneficial to investigate moving some of the sales floor to a commission-based pay. There is a lot of pressure to open new accounts and move product but the incentive isn't there. It is a fun and enjoyable job if you are a people person.

    Advice to Management

Macy's is striving for excellence and setting the standard for an ideal work environment.

    Pros

Love the training and gratis, love helping customers with makeup

    Cons

Some fellow associates could be replaced, but Macy's seems to look at there sales numbers more than there team player attitude.

    I worked at Macy's part-time

    Pros

This was a great place to work while going to school. I needed the flexibility in schedule but it also increased my business skills. I learned a lot there and enjoyed the people I worked with. Retail is another world with competition and varying types of customers but you learn a lot about yourself.

    Cons

As a flex, I picked up shifts that ranged between 4 - 7 hours long. It took my feet a long to get used to being on my feet for that long on hard floors.
Customer service can be challenging at times with those difficult customers who suck the life out of you. I appreciated my customer service experience because it gives me a different perspective when I am a customer.

    Pros

Discount was nice to have on clothes and products. Continued education on sales techniques. Multiple locations, well known brand, room for growth.

    Cons

Working for a Macys that has a union, protects lazy and unmotivated employees and makes managing impossible. Poor communication between employees and managers, long hours and open on most holidays. Extreme pressure to pressure customers to open credit cards.

    Advice to Management

    Value employees

    Pros

Good Co-workers. The benefits are good. Online employee access to In-site to monitor commissions and benefits is really good. Updated computer inventory and delivery systems. Good inventory

    Cons

Lot's of pressure to sell furniture protection plans and credit. Customers cannot pick up furniture even though the warehouse is only 10 miles away which causes you to lose sales. Excessive micro-managing by management to the point of not being able to keep quality employees. Takes a while to start to commissioning because your draw starts from day one even though you are training and still learning the system.
