I worked at Macy's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice people and some fun parties.

    Cons

Management is in a tail spin. They are stuck in spreadsheets and old technology and will welcome no new ideas. Very sad to see this group bring down an American icon.

    Advice to Management

Leave and see what other companies do in the world. 20 to 30 years at the same job is hurting you and Macy's.

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

MST is very forward thinking and expects a lot out of their development teams to bring new and better ideas to the Omnichannel market.

    Cons

MST needs to create more opportunities for promotion and cross team collaboration for the associates. A more flexible work schedule can work out well to address some of the business and collaboration efforts that occur in a virtual environment.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the promotion abilities within your team and if a glass ceiling has been reached, provide some creative ways to show advancement within the organization.

    I worked at Macy's

    Pros

It can be a relaxed environment, unless you are stressed by a lack of initiative. As a contractor, it can be like a vacation of sorts. Just make sure that you document how and when the permanent employees are AWOL or miss appointments.

    Cons

You can six months to a year here with nothing to reference as a professional or personal accomplishment. All of the *appearances* of progress are just that.

    Advice to Management

It's too far gone. There are pockets of competence, but it's hit or miss.

I worked at Macy's for less than a year

    Pros

Macys has a great working culture and I do believe a lot of employees enjoy working there. I worked with great folks there who made coming to work fun and joyful. Projects are always tough and the company tries to support as much as possible by putting in proper processes, listening and responding to requests. It is good to see that Macys is always aiming to improve processes to deliver efficient work.

    Cons

    1) The recruiting agents Macys.com employs for their tech contractors are below average. The owners of these companies act/lead as program managers, however they do next to no work and charge a lot for it, adding up to tens and thousands to projects. There is a lot of 'i scratch your back you scratch mine' and manipulating the system going. The recruiters try and pull the wool over the management's eyes, and they... get away with it quite well. Their whole focus is to make money off the candidates they bring in and take advantage of the system. Their concern for their candidates is next to none and unfortunately I experienced this first hand. 2) Its a big boys club where both full time and contract recruitment is done based on 'like attracts like'. Its all about bringing in their friends and not the best people for the job. 3) As there is no formal yearly evaluation for contractors, the evaluation ends up being done behind the candidate's backs and by 'hear say' and not face to face with the person who is dedicated to the actual work. I think Macys will benefit more if they treat the contractors some what similar to full time employees when it comes to evaluations.

    Advice to Management

    * Please get rid of the riff raff one man / two man recruitment agents you have. Yes there is one large vendor on the CMS side that I applaud for their dedication to Macys.com and am impressed with their intense work ethic, however the others are not serving you. You already have an HR, perhaps develop a contract arm so their is no bias when hiring. * Please have more frequent training on political correctness... and rules and regulation around sexual harassment to act as a reminder. There are certain people floating around who believe those rules do not apply to them. * Management should introduce an informal evaluation with contractors to give feedback and more importantly to also get feedback on what's going on, you'll be surprised how much information contractors have and how beneficial that can be to Macys.
