I worked at Madison School & Community Recreation full-time

    Pros

Variety of different programs and positions to fit different people. Works very hard to make sure that all participants are able to participate fulling especially the school age program; new overall leadership so unable to comment on that

    Cons

limited hours for part time staff

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Madison School & Community Recreation part-time

    Pros

-Most program leader staff are great.
-Get to work with kids from a bunch of different backgrounds

    Cons

-I had worked for the MSCR SREC program for two years. The first year was great and it was run very well. The second year, however....not so much. The site director had no idea what she was doing and was the most disorganized thing I've ever seen. We were constantly short of supplies to do the activities and got no support from the higher ups. To make matters worse, any suggestions that were offered to make the program run more smoothly were instantly shot down. The 'bosses' of the site were rude and arrogant and would yell at staff members over the walkie-talkies and play favorites with certain staff members.

    Advice to Management

Try to hire people based on qualifications and make sure the people in charge know what they are doing. I had really hoped to do a third year with MSCR but after how bad it was last time I won't make that mistake again.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Madison School & Community Recreation part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with are the best. Everyone is so friendly, helpful, supportive... I've never worked anywhere that the staff was as appreciative as MSCR. Plus, at the end of every workday you walk away knowing that you've done something good for your community and you've made someone's life a little bit better. It's a win-win from every angle.

    Cons

There's no downside to working for MSCR. If you're given the opportunity to work with them don't ask for 24 - 48 hours to think about it, ask how soon you begin.

    Advice to Management

Management should know that they're appreciated by their staff as much as they appreciate their staff.

I worked at Madison School & Community Recreation part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very organized, a lot of support from supervisors, you get to make the summer fun for at-risk kids, you get to be outside a lot, you get to be creative with lesson plans, competitive pay

    Cons

It's pretty hard to get full-time hours here, sometimes spending the day with 25 kids can be exhausting

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing!

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Madison School & Community Recreation full-time

    Pros

-Get to work with a fun and young staff
-Spend your time mentoring and having summer fun with great kids

    Cons

-Directors can vary from site-to-site so experiences are very different between program leaders
-Fairly unorganized at the beginning of the summer, I didn't know which site I was working at until the first day of training

    Advice to Management

Don't overwork the lower-income school districts. Know when to say "no we can't take on this higher-risk student because we don't have the resources this summer."

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

MSCR provides great job opportunities for people looking to work in childcare or those interested in becoming teachers. The starting pay for an entry level, part-time position (Program Leader) is around $10 an hour.

    Cons

Those in supervisory roles are often still hourly employees and you do not get sizable pay raises. It would be nice if all Site Director positions were salaried.
