I have been working at Magellan Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is great and the work done being supportive to members and connecting them with resources is rewarding. Not to mention there is a cafeteria and gym onsite. A great perk of working at Magellan.

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations to manage work load; constantly working additional hours to keep up with the workload (unpaid); frequent changes of work expectations; high turnover of frustrated staff; lack of adequate support to staff; permanent weekend/evening schedule and shamefully the health insurance is horrible (HSA only option).

    Advice to Management

Listen to your clinical staff when genuine concerns are voiced about what's not working; listen to suggestions; and make an effort to find a solution to fix the problem. As a result, staff will be loyal to Magellan; you'll be able to keep great clinical staff; staff will feel valued; the morale will be up; and instead of wasting money on constantly training new staff (to replace staff who constantly leave), you'll save money and be able to get better health insurance suitable for your staff who work for a healthcare company.

    Pros

The money is good for a social worker

    Cons

I couldn't be happier to be out of this job. Coworkers refer to the company as "majailen". Everything you do is monitored but not for quality. All that matters is quantity and profits. Members and their needs are irrelevant. It's impossible to get good treatment for people with carefirst/Magellan insurance as very few providers accept their low rates. You will be frustrated by the constant demands of management that make no sense and change almost daily. You will get emails from management telling you to stop talking and laughing in the office. You will never feel appreciated by management and they publicly shame everyone. Turnover has been among the worst I've experienced, management continues to justify the high turnover as "growing pains" of a start up. Watching 30+ clinicians leave in less than a year is a problem but nobody at Magellan seems to care. They just continue to hire new clinicians through temp agencies. The worst part about this company is that they review their own employees mental health claims. Your coworkers, boss, etc could know exactly what type of treatment you've had and your diagnosis. Magellan could care less about this and likely continues this practice to intimidate their employees. I could go on and on about this company and my experience. It has truly been traumatizing. The money is good but it's not worth the poor treatment not to mention the many ethical dilemmas you will find yourself in.

    Advice to Management

I know this place will never change as long as they are making money and are not caught in their unethical practices. My only advice is to get out of here if you care about your clinical license.

I have been working at Magellan Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A job here is better than being unemployed. The PTO is generous compared to most other companies and many jobs allow you to work remotely most if not all of the time.

    Cons

If you accept a job offer, you'll quickly be frustrated with inefficient processes, outdated and ineffective technology and departments that refuse to work together, always "pushing back" on requests because of limited or no resources. Most department store aren't staffed appropriately to meet customer requirements. Check out how many major customers have not renewed their contracts over the last several years. This should tell you something, the customers go to better companies or do it themselves, because Magellan doesn't have technology and infrastructure in place that is capable of doing what the customer needs/wants.

When you find a great co worker who really wants to get work done, there are roadblocks because you're dependent on other teams for whom your request is not a priority. If one or both coworkers work from home, there is not technology in place to collaborate, even as simple as sharing screens with Skype for Business or a similar tool. Again, very outdated technology. Most folks who occasionally work from home use personal laptops to remote into their office desktops, ineffective and outdated.

If you come from a company that invests in and supports their workers, you'll be frustrated because you won't find that here. You're just a warm body who is a resource to do the task at hand. Management is so stressed out and overworked / burdened that they don't have any incentive or time to make good employees better. They all lack the foresight for investing in their most valuable way of growing the company into the future.

As someone else said, "it's not in the budget" is the default for-to reason for saying No to any thing that might make getting the work done more effective and efficient.

Oh, they only offer two high-deductible health plans with HSA. Look elsewhere if you need good health insurance.

    Advice to Management

I stopped giving advice a year or more ago, they pretend to be all attentive to your suggestion or idea, and then it goes into the circular file.

I worked at Magellan Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Depending on manager, there's a certain amount of growth potential. It is a good place with flexibility for families to balance work and home. Work doesn't appear to strenuous or extensive. There's a good balance of tasks in comparison to salary. Employees are provided with tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Overall, this is a nice place if you are content, complacent with where you are or are starting out.

    Cons

Benefits have not improved year to year. Salaries can stand to increase to at or above industry average given the work performed. Lack of intellect and savvy within admin staff. Indirect backstabbing and play on politics when seeking advancement...you can be compared to someone who does not perform your same tasks or possess your same skill set. Your privileges may also be questioned by colleagues or other managers who have no direct impact, influence or work relationship so as to diminish your abilities or privileges which are based upon your own skill set. Lack of diversity in effective management.

    Advice to Management

Focus on technological advancement within operations structure, not only in nationwide programs and business ventures. Flexibility for all employees to telework not just a select few. Focus on overall process improvement so as to create efficiency, reduce costs and increase profits. Not every department/manager is willing to adopt modules for improvements or adapt to change, which is essential for taking MH to the next level in behavioral health.

National Imaging Associates was a total mess. CEO hired her friends, gave them fancy titles and huge salaries. Kept them around as long as they said "yes". They finally figured it out and let her go.

    Pros

Magellan has improved its work experience over the last 4-5 years as compared to my first 4-5 years here. Salaries have gotten better; benefits and time off have always been good. They do a lot more telecommuting than they used to, and there can be pretty good scheduling flexibility if you are not in certain jobs like a phone queue. Lots of opportunity for internal job movement. Company has had a lot of growth in last 5 years.

    Cons

The company manages budgets very closely and are often doing reorganizations, trying to trim the budget even closer leading to frequent changes, including possible staff reductions. Company depends on contracts so there are always accounts coming and going, also leading to changes (i.e., hiring, layoffs, etc.). They preach about work/life balance, but they keep the staffing so thin that this is not always a reality, particularly for exempt employees.

    Advice to Management

Don't run staffing budgets so tight that people are maxed out all the time. The company makes plenty of money so set your staffing levels at a comfortable level so employees can be less stressed out, take their PTO, etc.
