I worked at Magenta Studio Photo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Fun if you like kids.

    Entry level.

    Some nice co workers.

    Cons

Awful branch management, maybe it was just my location but all the reviews on here say the same thing about management. Management would blame others for things they were in charge of/ expected other employees to do things they could do and I felt like they couldn't be asked to care about the job/employees outside of when they were clocked in.

Horrible scheduling. You don't know if you'll be cut from the schedule/exactly what time you will be starting and finishing until closing time which is 7-10pm the night before you work, as it's posted in nightly in a group chat. Impossible to plan anything/have a life/ maintain school and work balance especially if you're a student.

"2 weeks of intense training" was promised but it was more like a couple of days and really unorganized and different people did it each time and it felt incredibly rushed.

Employees and management would gossip openly about customer issues and about fellow employees. Pretty unnecessarily dramatic and gossipy bunch.

Management would schedule more people to work than needed at a time, so there were ever 2 people at reception one would have to clock out. The "clock out if you're not needed" rule was ridiculous.

Pressure to sell. I was literally told that not selling an expensive frame to a customer was cheating/scamming them out of their money because they already spent $ on their overpriced digitals.

This company has poor values and poor reviews everywhere. I don't think theres a location rated above 3 stars on google maps, and most negative yelp reviews are hidden by the company.

"Break room" was used to store equipment, customer orders, bags and coats. Consisted of a microwave and a chair in a storage room equivalent to a hallway.

Hired photographers with no training and expect to be known as a "professional photography studio", but when customers view their photos, some are out of focus, cut off, repeats etc and you have to explain why they're "still good" in hopes that they'll buy them. Obviously no one is going to want to go with the expensive "Buy All" package if not all their photos were worth it.

So many customer issues, unhappy people and unnecessary drama with low pay for the stress of this job. Old customer issues were resolved with a "we were under old management, we have a new way of doing things now" approach and it was still terrible. So many more terrible things I could say about this company, mostly specific to the branch I was located at. I was excited to get this job but the company is such a disaster.

    Advice to Management

Hire better management that care about the job and the employees.

    Make the scheduling system better.

Management, take accountability for your mistakes once in a while.

    Train employees more thoroughly.

    Pros

Good employer if you are a student and if you're starting as a photographer.
Can be interesting if you like taking pictures of baby and pregnant women..

    Cons

A lot of pressure is put on employees
The salary isn't worth all the pressure they put on you.
    Weird schedules.
Personally I had probably one of the worst manager ever, she couldn't give any positive or constructive critics, i worked there for 3 months and around 6 people quit because of said manager!

I worked at Magenta Studio Photo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The other employees were so nice and kind and always looked out for each other. Only reason I stayed so long was because of my fellow co-workers.
    Pay and commission were decent.

    Cons

Schedule would be released the night before (sometimes even 11pm!).
Interactions between management and head office was always sporadic and unorganized.
They said there would be "two weeks of intense training" but we got four days at most. Not to mention training was incredibly unorganized and different store leads would have different methods and you were expected to know them all at once.
Expected to learn as you go. Training is skit based, which was somewhat helpful but mostly just awkward.
Way too much pressure to sell the incredibly overpriced packages while rarely having any special promotions.
Management never ever stood up for employees when clients were being ridiculous. Management were all pushovers and gave clients way too many free items just to please them. Constantly gave out free photo sessions or let clients use coupons expires months/years ago.
Store leads would gossip openly in front of other employees.
Hired photographers with absolutely zero experience.
Not a lot of opportunity to grow or move up.
Way too many responsibilities placed on employees without proper compensation. Regular sales associates would be doing store lead/manager jobs while not being promoted or compensated.
Store leads would constantly have days where they would only clock in if they were absolutely needed; otherwise they would just be on their phones or waking around the mall.
There was no proper backroom for employees to eat lunch or store their bags/coats.

    Advice to Management

Come up with a better training regimen and make sure all people training are on the same page!
Hire new management that actually care about their employees!
Have a better incentive program to motivate employees.
Have a better way to plan schedules so employees can have a social life.
Hire photographers with some experience, even if it's just a hobby, so training them is easier. Let them exercise their creativity more as well.
Have store leads/managers act more professional when in front of employees and clients; i.e. not on their phone.
Don't make employees do a store lead/manager's job without proper compensation or promotion.

I worked at Magenta Studio Photo part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Rewarding work
    Fun and outgoing environment
    Team orientated
    Great for students

    Cons

Management would rather throw a write up at your rather than help
    Lossing good quality staff fast
    High expectations with retail pay
Now hiring people to be photographers that have no experience
High costs for a retail environment
    No job security
    No room for growth
Management gossips openly to staff members
Impossible to have a social life as you get the schedule for the next day 8pm the day before

    Advice to Management

You vocalize how replaceable everyone is and you're losing incredibly talented and dedicated staff because you refuse to pay them for the workload you supply them. You need to realize the quality of staff that's with you and learn to accommodate and appreciate the face of your company.

I worked at Magenta Studio Photo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good entry level job.
    Flexible hours.
    Small work environment.
    In the mall.
You don't need to know much about photography to excel at this job.
Honestly not much pros to this job.

    Cons

Expected to go above & beyond selling ridiculously expensive packages.
Slow and unorganized training for new employees.
Expected to learn on the fly.
Divide between management and veteran front line employees.
Company thinks they're rebounding but are actually really struggling.
Hires photographers to do sales instead of actually taking pictures.

    Advice to Management

Train new employees right from the get go, with proper training instead of expecting your current employees who don't believe in your new training system to train new employees.

It's pretty hard for new employees to take management seriously when company is struggling and current employees are dissatisfied with management already.

Honestly will be surprised if this company lasts another 3 years. Everyone has camera phones and are happy with their pictures on there. Either lower your prices and include more benefits to the customer or watch your business disappear.

    Pros

Great staff! They are a blast to work with, I would most likely say that I was staying because of them. Fun work environment.

Good experience into the creative/arts industry, since they train those who are not exactly experienced in the field.

    Cons

So they say that they want you to be more creative when you take photos, but then look at what you have made in the end and critique it saying that is not Magenta Standards. So they constrain your limits on creativity. Management was really bad, in terms of store management.

Became repetitive after a while - since you are doing 5 photo sessions a day, with pressure to meet photo quality and quantity standards.

For the longest time, they had no employee incentive to keep them motivated. But fortunately they started picking it up for a few months.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff. Store manager was not considerate of what her staff had to say, seemed like she was looking out for herself and her own benefits. Pointed out more negative criticism, instead of constructive criticism.

    Pros

Great staff and a very energetic, fun and dynamic work environment. Always a pleasure meeting clients from all different walks of life.

    Cons

The management is horrible. They try to push your creativity but at the same time strictly regulate your creativity to adhere to their own rules. They, only as of recently, have started to employ photographers with 0 professional experience. They pride themselves for being a uniquely creative studio and yet the more they hire people who are not meant to be photographers, the more they are bringing their stature down to that of a "snap-studio" (i.e. Sears or Walmart). The communication between the store managers and head office is poor. They NEED to wipe out all store managers and start fresh with fun, intuitive and knowledgable people.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff! Respond to your staff complaints!
