    there are many caring employees who give their all to make a difference with the population we serve

    long hours, broken mental health system, senior management who are disconnected from the reality that employees deal with every day

    listen to your employees-- you do not need to hire an outside agency to understand why employee morale is low

    Worthwhile work, quality supervision, generally good atmosphere and teamwork

    Cons

    Pay could be better, but what else it new? Changing paperwork, but again, change is a constant, isn't it.

    Advice to Management

    Don't talk to employees about engagement, talk to them about how happy they are, how productive they feel, if they have room to grow, and feel they re treated fairly.

    Pros

    Good people for the most part; Most seem dedicated to their work, happy to have jobs but also with a dedicated, emotional connection to growing the business and supporting its mission.

    Cons

    Executive management team is often lost in confusion on decisions points, leaving middle and lower management frustrated, dissatisfied and perhaps most of all, distrusting of their leadership and competency. Much money is spent on processes or projects which are later abandoned or placed on back-burners due to discourse and passive bickering among the small but dysfunctional executive management team.

    *Highly political environment where even some senior management appear to allow, even support an unhealthy atmosphere of distrust and competition. Much of this leads both to and from a poor management structure of the company among its functional business/clinical lines.

    *Dated, cramped office spaces at some of the sites, but better at the organization's inpatient hospital.

    *Technology is lacking, frozen from growth and functionality due to a highly politicized, draconian and murky relationship with Maine Health Inc./Maine Medical Center.

    *An incredible amount of waste on failed I.T. upgrades and projects due to a lack of vision and leadership. The organization relies heavily on one employee of another organization to drive their technology strategy, yet no other professionals in technology are consulted. Suspiciously, one person appears to control the vast majority of both the technology growth process, its strategy and its spending.

    Advice to Management

    Consider outside advice to help fix the problems in your upper management, even if it hurts to hear those truths. Lessen the politics, foster collaboration among your employee base: from the most lowly janitor to the onsite Maine Medical employees. Periodic pizza parties don't work. LISTEN to what you're hearing at the ground floor and reading online. Appoint REAL professionals to help lead your technology growth and strategy as well as boosting your and reassessing your business practices.

    Pros

    Basically thorough and fair hiring and personnel practices, a growing entity with a new name, that seems to really try to make positive steps to keep up with healthcare trends and stay competitive in a changing market.

    Cons

    I think the challenges are common among most mental health job, such as relatively low pay, and sometimes having to do things that makes sense from the corporate office or three supervisory levels up, but don't make as much sense on the ground.

    Advice to Management

    I think whatever you can do to maintain some of the feel of the smaller entities that merged to become what you are today, would help.

    Cons

    Limited opportunity for advancement, unless you further education to a bachelors degree
    Hourly pay is too low considering the direct responsibility for client care, however this is to be expected working for a non profit in a social services setting. The benefits for time off and health care are very generous.

    Advice to Management

    A great organization overall. A few issues would be a market survey on salary and a raise for all staff based on findings. Also it would be very nice to have discounts to local businesses such as a gym or museums.

    Pros

    Pretty good pay and benefits, comparatively. Flexibility, at least for salaried employees, regarding time off. They had a clean work environment.

    Cons

    It was populated by some of the most dysfunctional managers and "leaders" I have ever seen. Management was by fear and threat, managers were very territorial, there was little teamwork, people were set up for failure. The dysfunction trickled from the top down, and the HR department reinforced the problems by being pretty incompetent and by hiring for fit (which is usually a good thing, but not when the environment is so dysfunctional) so the only way to survive was to either leave, try not to ruffle feathers, or comply. I feel bad for organizations that are absorbed into the MEMHP family.

    Advice to Management

    Realize that human capital is your greatest asset and treat your employees accordingly. Create an environment of respect, and set people up for success instead of yelling at them for failure.
