    Pros

Great people, programs for students to learn about others' research, useful talks on relevant skills for young researchers, advice on grad school

    Cons

The insurance and benefits was automatic signup although I was only there for a summer, which became confusing and hard to get out of

    Pros

Good benefits. 403B match, good medical/dental that you pay based on what you make, room to advance in your job, tuition assistance, shift differentials, premium pay if the call you in or ask you to stay late, management stands up for you if you are in the right.

    Cons

I feel like pay could be a little bit more for how much the company makes but they do offer raises

I have been working at Maine Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

decent medical benefits, good pay (if fought for at time of hire), nice 403b with match,

    Cons

work life balance can prove difficult with on-call schedule, adding on new facilities sometimes multiples in a year is just expanding too quickly with little standardization of systems/processes

    Advice to Management

prioritize projects better, place is so big supporting so many facilities need to know where to focus

I worked at Maine Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic coworkers who really care about their patients. Decent benefits and options. Fair work/ life balance. I believe in the organization and its people as a whole.

    Cons

Management in my department was belittling and ignored employee concerns. Did not acknowledge requests for more responsibility or foster employee growth. Frowned upon initiative when it didn't fit into the small box they had created for one person to work within. I did not feel my contribution was valued or my intellect and capacity acknowledged, let alone respected, by management. Catty and secretive environment where employees with time under their belt skated by doing minimal work. Pay not sufficient for administrative non-management staff given the education requirements and increasing cost of living in this location.

    Advice to Management

People who have done a job well for a long time are not necessarily cut out to manage a group of individuals doing that job; they must have good management training and a background showering managerial success. Better onboarding/ job training and support from management, not only coworkers, would help employee morale and reduce the exceptionally high turnover.

    Pros

Great place to learn new things and take care of challenging critically ill patients.

    Cons

You are not valued as a nurse. You are replaceable.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff members concerns and value each individual.

I worked at Maine Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling as hospital is 24-7. Lots of moving around the office. Fast paced. Always new changes to make the admitting department better. You'll always be kept busy. (Mostly) wonderful co workers, I made some great friends here. Good place to get your foot in the door and gain knowledge and experience as this is usually entry level. Upper management seems knowledgeable and hard working. The managers I reported to are easy to talk to. Weekend, 2nd, 3rd shift differential, and call pay. Good healthcare benefits. Large facility always being upgraded. Plenty of overtime offered. Lots of moral boost. 8 weeks of training so you fully understand all aspects of this position. Trainers at Washington Ave are wonderful, smart, and very helpful. Managers are on the floor a lot and were always helping out the team.

    Cons

Hard to request time off due to lack of coverage. Admitting department desperately needs to be upgraded. This department does have a higher than average turn-over rate due to MaineHealth being so large that a lot of employees start here then transfer to other departments or companies. Pay could be better, it is practically minimum wage. There are annoying requirements and too-strict dress codes, it's 2017. Frequent workflow changes are hard to stay on top of.

    Advice to Management

Rally for a pay raise and maybe people would find this job worth staying. There is a lot to know and learn as admitting is the central function of the whole hospital, yet Patient Access employees make as much as employees in the kitchen (which I understand is hard work as well but requires less skill). Listen to what your employees recommend.

I worked at Maine Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, decent pay, adequate technical training

    Cons

Coworkers in IT were allowed to vent with impunity whenever they chose to. There was no intervention from management, who had little or no technical savvy, and were unable to see incompetence when it stared them in the face. Eventually some of these people resigned, after a disastrous implementation of a new software package. In the meantime they engaged in overt nepotism and protected employees who yelled at others, were threatened by competence and refused to take ownership of long-unresolved user problems.

    Advice to Management

Listen to ALL of the troops. Be aware that you don't know it all. The person who toadies to you should not be the sole source of your information.

    Pros

    Cons

Food +/-. Parking can be a challenge.
