I worked at Manassas City Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Great team in building. Numerous administrators for help. Great support from other teachers. Generally promote from within. Nice, clean building.

    Cons

Micromanaging from central office. Lack of support from families. Little to no student discipline. Apathy from students. Lots of meetings.

    Advice to Management

Let the teachers teach. Allow us to do what we do best. Meetings on every teacher work day take time away and force us to grade papers at home on our own time.

    Pros

If you live in or near Manassas, it is convenient to work here.

    Cons

This school has a negative work culture. Teachers are told to do things or get written up. The motivation for performance is to avoid punishment for students and staff. There are meetings before and after school 3 days out of the week, outside of contractual hours, that teachers are required to attend with no compensation. The administration team is unorganized and makes mandates without instructing teachers how to fulfill them. I have not met anyone who likes working st this school yet and I've been here 3 months now.

    Advice to Management

Assume positive intent. 99% of educators are in the position because they care about children, assume they want to work towards student success. Talk to the employees from this perspective and give them the time and resources to fulfill their positive intent. It's a very different feeling when a teacher is told to do something or get written up versus for student achievement. The culture is toxic here.

I worked at Manassas City Public Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

My time with MCPS was excellent! Though I have moved on to a new school system, I am grateful for what I learned.

    Cons

Difficult to navigate some of the small town mentality. Very closed minded people. Not the most receptive to minority populations. Over engaged public that just thrives off of any inkling of dirt that they can drum up. Poor principals become even poorer central office personnel. Burnett, Abt, Saunders in particular.

    Advice to Management

Be careful with how involved Central Office is with individual buildings..
