I worked at Manitowoc Crane Group full-time

    Pros

Peer-to-peer co-operation for the most part perceived as excellent. This was essential in view of a top management that I felt was largely disconnected from real life and the daily challenges on the shop floor . Received valuable support from direct supervisors, not just lip service. Forged many lines of communication with engineering and production departments which proved valuable in the timely resolution of quality incidents in production.

    Cons

Not enough focus on design for manufacturability, critical characteristics, and fit and function during New Product development. Quality and build issues were not adequately addressed during the prototype phase. Instead I observed too many problems during pilot builds and serial production that should have been recognized beforehand. All in all, quality planning and design process needs to be structured according to APQP. Product quality at Manitowoc appears to be more of an afterthought rather than a structured process aka APQP. It relies way too much on a system of Quality Improvements (QIs) that for the most part are issued by production and quality personnel to resolve problems after launch of production. QIs give rise to ECOs with resulting design revisions. With so many folks let go during numerous reductions in workforce and a decimated quality department, I am afraid the customer will see an increase in build issues that were filtered out and addressed before.

    Advice to Management

Top management, you were perceived by your soldiers as clueless and out of touch with reality. You did not emphasize and embrace the values the APQP process brings to the table. On top of that you denied us the resources to adequately address the numerous build issues that became apparent in every day operations. Training was largely irrelevant because shop floor operations were in constant crisis mode and did not call for the tools you presented to us. While it is true that the heavy equipment industry as a whole is experiencing a slump, the lack of a solid design and quality planning process only adds to your problems. Good luck with turning this ship around. You had a very significant number of highly paid upper management officers who failed to deliver and as usual the guys on the lower end of the totem pole end up paying the price.

Can't think of any, this company was going down hill before the split and they just keep going down.

The company is not managed well. The split has caused even more problems.

I worked at Manitowoc Crane Group full-time

    Pros

It was a great place to work before current management took over. Good pay and good benefits. Shop was always kept clean.

    Cons

Current management changed to many things all at the same time. Employees couldn't find parts and were blamed for not meeting production goals. Now moving to Pennsylvania.

    Advice to Management

Ask lower management and employees before making changes. Hold the people responsible for making poor decisions. Listen when employees suggest something.

    Recommends

I worked at Manitowoc Crane Group (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Loved the job and the people who worked there.

    Cons

No cons to write, my personal cons do not apply to everyone.

    Advice to Management

Need to make better choices in picking management. Degrees are not what make them successful. Bad management can create a toxic working environment and they can also take a good staff and destroy it. Causes good employees to leave and the others to lose motivation.
