I worked at Manulife as a contractor

    Pros

Senior management is pretty good. Great work/life balance.

    Cons

I used to work for operations and there are too many unambitious gossipy women and way too many middle aged or/and socially awkward men who stare at women or try to get their attention. Maybe they need to hire some young talent who actually belongs to the 21st century. It's like working for a gigantic, bureaucratic sinking ship company that is still stuck in the late 1970's and 80's. Terrible, terrible, terrible!

I have been working at Manulife full-time

    Pros

    Flexible Schedules
    Tech Lounge
    Great Microsoft training classes
    Coworkers

    Cons

Lack of clear communication and direction from management
Promotions based on politics not skill sets
AVP's and directors constantly play the blame game and cost people their jobs to keep their own
    Management is not trustworthy
Working on trying to figure out how to increase employee morale for 7 years now

    Advice to Management

Used to be a great company to work for. Investment Division Senior Management should clean house for the AVP's and Directors that don't have the skill sets for their role and that bully and treat employees like animals. There are so many horrific AVP's and Directors in the Investment Division that lack ALL ethics and mistreat employees.

Classic corporate structure. Mediocre people stewing around in useless meetings.

    Advice to Management

Bring some value to the product.

    Pros

    Great team environment amongst coworkers.

    Cons

Management is terrible. Focus on wrong measuring sticks - making it less client driven and more matrix driven.

    Advice to Management

Restructure what is important for the business.

    Pros

it was a job - nothing else

    Cons

All about the numbers - not about the people. Well, some people it was about as overt favouritism was rampant. Managers though nothing of giving destructive criticism to those not favoured in front of the whole team. Bathrooms were disgusting. I was lied to during the interview as were two colleagues that started with me. No room for promotion or movement either.

    Advice to Management

    Get some ethics

I have been working at Manulife full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible work arrangements, including work from home opportunities

    Cons

The company is focused on short-term fixes rather than what will benefit the company and the business for the long run. Employees' input is disregarded, and the company regularly claims financial hardship around the time where bonuses or raises are generally given out. Salary raises are never even close to cost of living increases, and any salary raises that come from a move up within the company are sadly insignificant. Manulife continues to cut benefits; most employees can no longer afford family coverage. Growth within the company is lacking, as the company would rather outsource jobs to other countries, which also results in poor quality and poor customer service (for a company that prides itself on being "customer centric"). If you like politicians, by all means, join the company as they will certainly sell themselves and respond to any questions with a well-worded information-less spiel. Unfortunately, a lot of companies are like this nowadays.

    Advice to Management

If you treat your employees well, they will take care of the company.

    Pros

Good working environment and work life balance, extra Employee Provident Fund (EPF) Contribution by Employer, Awesome Colleagues & Manager, flexi hours,

    Cons

Not much opportunity to grow, Limited resources, For a tech company many of the restrictions put in place makes it feel backward.

    Advice to Management

Its a good place to work in but some decisions made by the management ruined it. Management should not put people's careers and livelihood at risk or ruin it.

    Pros

Decent employer with interesting work, competitive benefits and good location for Toronto, Waterloo employees. Recent renovations nice. Lots of diversity in the workforce.

    Cons

Senior leaders are bullies. They are all friends given length of time at co, and protect each others bad behaviour. Time for significant change at the top of the house.

    Advice to Management

Start with big changes in HR.

I have been working at Manulife full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits were great as it is an insurance company, primarily. Depending on your group, you have the option to work from home.

    Cons

Managements expectations are unrealistic. Opportunity for upwards movement seems stiff. People who have manager experience are getting hired into entry level positions.

    Advice to Management

When employees are new to the organization (1-4months), let them learn. The company is very large and even the smartest person needs time to understand the culture.
