    Pros

Most people are easy to get along with on a daily basis

    Cons

Managing from top down, strong favortism towards a handful of male executives, if you don't have a potfolio, you're nothing

    Advice to Management

    Be inclusive, promote from within

    Pros

Location, support of continuing education programs.

    Cons

Lots of corporate red tape, very political, and big company problems. Virtually no upward mobility and lots of turnover.

    Advice to Management

Establish career paths and incentivize contributors rather than using an out of the box performance rating system.

    Pros

Manulife Asset Management is part of a large, global organization. This affords interesting synergies, and if you're in the right position, interaction with overseas colleagues. Also offers the opportunity to work overseas. Work is by and large interesting.

    Cons

Departments at most levels understaffed. Means not only are you working late hours, but everyone you try to contact for input is also overwhelmed, making it harder to get projects done.

    Advice to Management

Staff up before quality starts to suffer.

I worked at Manulife full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A great benefit package, there is a gym on location. They post the job range on each role and make it available to employees. Large enough that moving internally although challenging is possible.

    Cons

Manulife seems to have lost it's way over the last couple of years. They seem to have become more concerned in buying out other companies than nurturing their current employees. Maybe this is true of most public companies, but cutting spending on resources is not always the best way to raise your stock price.

    Advice to Management

Make roles not so manager dependent, a bad manager can lead to good employees leaving. Invest in company infrastructure, while having 30 people split two printers may be cost effective, it is inefficient. Same ideas with Workday and Service Now, try them yourself and ask is this truly working for your employees.

I worked at Manulife full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Experience, Top FI and Insurance companies, Global exposure, structure and leadership training,.

    Cons

Bad culture, and out of touch with reality

    Advice to Management

Focus on newer technology rather than old school hustling of high net worth clientele. Money spent on your "agents" who sit around doing nothing can be better spent on newer tech and social marketing. Move away from the stone age.

    I worked at Manulife full-time

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Charismatic new CEO, seems to understand the need for massive change.

    Cons

Super political organisation, lots of talk about things like digitization and innovation but tough to get anything done without death by committee.

    Advice to Management

Need to cut bureaucracy, too many layers, stop the politics and infighting.

I have been working at Manulife full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to work on different roles and projects. You can make good friends. Can get help from them. Have been here for 7+ years.

    Cons

Managers aren't always pleasant. Things can take negative turn if you don't do work in their style.

Always have a feeling you can get fired because company has grown through lots of changes and they are cutting staff in all functional areas in other offices.

Hard to get promoted and pay isn't the best in the industry.

    Advice to Management

Don't just talk the talk but rather practice it. Have people in role of authority who can speak adequately to their staff and not just men of few words. It if hard to understand their style and impacts our work.

I worked at Manulife full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunity to work in numerous different areas to really broaden your skillset; bonus structure was good; benefits were great!

    Cons

Review process wasn't strong; very small group of people are groomed for upwards mobility; weak on diversity; executive-level have very similar profile (see earlier comment regarding diversity); work-life balance was not great; team structures are constantly changing

    Advice to Management

Talking to numerous people who are still there, and drawing from my own experience, I'd say diversity and promoting to ensure a representative group of diverse leadership at the top is of utmost importance - not just for appearance, but primarily to ensure that there is a balanced view that guides good decision-making.
